To Bill Krystal, George Will and Rick Wilson, it was a huge mistake. They were kings of a dying ant hill. They wanted a world where Republicans were the minority party, the US was in endless wars, they were on TV as the face of conservatism, and THIS was the face of the Republican Party:

Those guys represented the we-stand-for-nothing GOP establishment, the country club uniparty wing. They are even of less use today than they had been in the past.
