As a science student at Yorktown High School, Alexandria tested the effect of various antioxidants on the lifespan of roundworms, known as Caenorhabditis elegans.
When organisms are under oxidative stress, there are more free radicals (chemicals with unpaired electrons) than antioxidants in the body to neutralize them. Those free radicals react quickly with many other chemicals, and without antioxidants to neutralize them, create cellular chaos. Such an unstable cellular environment has been hypothesized to be responsible for wrinkles, neurological diseases and even cancer.
Alexandria chose compounds with the highest cited number of antioxidant capabilities and observed how they impacted longevity of the roundworms. In some cases, lifespan was prolonged for as many as 33 days, almost doubling the nematode’s normal lifespan. Her findings indicated that antioxidants could potentially help prevent degenerative illnesses induced by oxidative stress.

Wondering... Do these high school science fair participants come up with their ideas all on their own?
My guess is that they receive a lot of guidance from teachers and other people in their research.

Back in the dark ages when I was in high school we had a chemistry teacher who really encouraged us to do science projects. At the time there were National Science Foundation summer science programs at universities and she encourged us to apply. I did 2 - one at Virgina Tech and one at Florida State. (Decades later my daughter did one at a local university).
My professors gave me some starting suggestions and turned me loose. Grad students helped advise day-to-day work. It was great. These projects became my science fair presentations. My chemistry teacher advised on display and effective presentation. I always acknowledged the support I received,
I ended up working for my FSU advisor as an undergrad. These experiences were helpful in getting into grad school.
I’m not surprised her experiment involved earthworms given that she is on their intellectual level.

We aren’t lawyers (thankfully). That’s just how it’s done. And it allows people to jump over to twitter and join in.
The judges at the International Science Fair (all are scientists) disagreed with you.
She “made” it to that fair at the exact moment chicks were being pushed for every STEM thing imaginable. She was a minority, in the NE.
She never pursued science in college.
The conclusion on how she got there is pretty easy to draw.
