The big water storage drums don’t work very well here. They’ll freeze straight through and burst.

Not only that, but water weighs a LOT and the bigger drums are almost unmovable..

I bought the larger drums (20 gal IIRC) once..they're an absolute beast to manage.

“One nice thing about living in a small town is we produce our own electricity from the river running thru town and we have water springs all over the area.”

That’s excellent. However, maybe see if the town can fully disconnect from ‘the grid’ and go into an island mode...or at least get them thinking about it. Also ‘suggest’ that they have at least some spare parts on hand, as many of their suppliers will soon be drying up, for a while.

This is such a crock of $&#t! I dont remember the government agencies issuing warnings like this when Obama was purposely bringing Ebola infected humans into the country!

“I am done with these people. I can’t handle The Stupid anymore. I have a month of food and I’m good for a shelter in place in case we can’t contain it. If the dummies want to risk not doing the same, they can. Cost me a few hundred bucks and I’ll eat it later if nothing comes of this at all. Taking cheap and simple precautions are the opposite of Panic. Panic is when The Stupid find out they were wrong and run out of their medications and other essentials ... if things go sideways (much to their dismay). Panic comes from a lack of planning, prudence and frankly... intelligence.”

Sums it up for me really well. I see no point to argue against people who are unable to even understand what it means when a country that produces something like 40% of the world’s exports shuts down for a month (and likely takes close to a year to get back to ‘normal’ again*). So I don’t even bother feeding the ‘just the flu’ types here anymore. It’s hopeless for them, and as my tag line says, they can explain their lack of preparation to their families - I won’t have that problem. I now have spare parts and/or backups for virtually everything I own, along with plenty of food and water purification capability.

*I grew up in the days of labor strikes, and one of the things that I remember was when they ended, it was like nothing even happened - the next day everyone was back at work and the lines were humming. There will no ‘next day’ here - it will be months, at a minimum, with lots of key people in China either dead or unable to work full-time. Enjoy our last days of ‘normalcy’, possibly for a very long time.

I am smelling the PLAN and the CIA on a joint venture in an international hoax. I don’t think that is possible but we live in a corrupt world.

“And nobody on FR is advocating panic. But it’s also the height of foolishness to NOT be ready for some kind of disruption in supply lines We are too spoiled in this country and take too much for granted, as if we are owed it and it’s always going to be there”

Even you’re overly optimistic about what’s coming...the supply lines have been disrupted for over a month now. We will feel pain, probably every one of us.

By what accounts is that 2% underestimated? In China, where too many of the ill didn’t have access to modern medicine?

Nuh huh! That 165 gallons of water in our garage is for when the grid goes down. We're not breaking into it over an epidemic. 😆

“I should be good for two years given that the last two winters are above average in Winter “moisture”.”

Probably will be that long before the ‘snow shovel’ supply is able to get back to normal. So, smart move.

We’ll be neighbors then, in a manner of speaking.

We are making out NYEXIT in April to NH, close to the VT border.

The people in NH as SO nice and friendly. It’s a different world from NYS, and we’re not even close to NYC.

Water??? Look out, the Y2k harpies are back. Watch out when they tell you to buy 5 gallon buckets of hard red winter wheat.

No, no, no.

Not hard RED wheat.

Hard WHITE wheat.

It makes far better whole wheat bread.

And you need to make sure your grain mill is working up to snuff.

And besides, the wheat berries last about FOREVER and there's nothing like a fresh loaf of bread make with freshly ground flour. MMMMMMMMmmmmmmm.........

In our new NH house we are greatly blessed with phenomenal water in an area that tends to have water hgih in iron and high in radon.

We had it tested and it’s low in everything and just out of the soft range for hardness.

We do have a pond and springs on the property, too, it was one of the things that was not on our must have list, but was on the very much want list. (not the pond, but the springs)

"One nice thing about living in a small town is we produce our own electricity from the river running thru town and we have water springs all over the area."

Nice. We're not in a small town, but we have a creek out back and get our water from our own well. I have a few extra jugs of water in the house for peace of mind, but storing a 2 week supply seems a lot. If we lost power for the well, we'd run it off generator to fill the water storage tank and hot water heater.

I’ll be breaking it in within the hour this morning - more Gorebal Warning white privilege fell over night.

I wasn’t referring to medicines.

It was to canned and boxed foods.

With meds, one has to be very careful for the reason you stated.

Penicillin is another one that goes bad, and Synthroid has a very short shelf life.
