Bob Iger will step down as Disney CEO and assume the role of executive chairman, Disney announced on Tuesday.
Bob Chapek, who most recently served as chairman of Disney parks, experiences and products, will assume the role of CEO, effective immediately, Disney announced.
Shares of Disney fell about 2.5% after hours.
Iger will remain executive chairman of Disney through the end of 2021, according to the company. He has been instrumental in making Disney a media powerhouse with key acquisitions and content plays. He launched Disney+, immediately making Disney a popular streaming service provider. Disney said the service had 26.5 million paying subscribers during the first quarter of 2020 after launching in November.

Iger wasn’t fired. He was kicked upstairs.
He kept Disney profitable.

Iger has been talking about leaving the CEO position since early 2019. Maybe this will allow a faster transition to a post-Iger regime at the company.
Disney is an entertainment and media powerhouse. Its not going anywhere.
That’s why he made the lateral move to chairman of the board. Now a new CEO will take up reins at the company.
There was some speculation that Iger was interested in running for President but decided against it. Perhaps he’s the DNC and the Democratic elite choice in the event of a brokered convention?

Well they might take a hit if the coronavirus empties the parks. I imagine the ones in China (Hong Kong and Shanghai) aren’t exactly doing great business right now.
Rumor has it Project Veritas is about to drop some video on ABC/Disney and it won’t be flattering, to say the least.
The share price has not shown a great imcrease for almost 5 years.You could have bought it in the summer of 2015 for about 118 a share. Today about 128. There were of course fluctuations during those five years.Perhaps this new CEO will improve its share price growth.
Disney China/Hong are closed, indefinitely. Macau reopened (Chinese legal gambling/money laundering).
