I fully understand that the Japanese had their own citizens protection as the highest priority (just as the US would), but a civilized nation has an obligation to help give the best basic healthcare to even foreigners under their jurisdiction. In my opinion, Japan failed that obligation here in this case.

“And shame on the Japanese officials for not taking passengers off that ship, especially after it became clear that the virus was being spread between passengers several days ago.”

It is quite likely that they did not want to put stress on their medical infrastructure until they had to. There are so many unknowns and how much of a risk to the general population dispersing the potential carriers poses is one of them.

Consider that some 1700 medical workers that have been involved with this disease have become infected. These people should know what they are doing (you would expect) and still they are getting infected in droves.

Bring em home! Require 14 day quarantine in US, but bring em home.

AMEN. We can protect our own citizens now that we're stopping illegals from stealing our wealth.

I think the WORST part of this disease in America right now is that we have POS, some even here, that are hoping it kills many, many Americans in cities they don’t like.

To you who think that way, don’t say you’re Christian, don’t wave the Flag and be prepared to weep when your own die because things have a way of coming back to you.

And yeah no I didn’t give a dam about the responses I get.

It’s a disgusting thing to hope for.

There were very few cases of COVID-19 initially confirmed on the ship, so the risk of stress to Japan’s First World modern medical services (as opposed to China’s Third World primitive medical services) was probably minimal.

So far, in First World countries, infection of medical service personnel has apparently been limited. Outside China, I don’t recall a single reported case yet.

Amen.

And along those lines, I’d like to make a call-out to a VERY special @$$wipe, dogbert41, who proposes to send the disease to a region where I and many other FReepers live. (All while spouting off Bible verses. What a bad joke.)

I’m NYC and some jerk mentioned wanting us dead in his post.

My reply was, um, kind of harsh.

Wishing millions dead was more harsh.

Because there are NO conservatives in ANY big city. /s

But the greater good is served! communists love that line.

It boggles the mind.

Agreed. I could see people getting stuck on diseased cruises now being somewhat responsible for themselves. But we evacuated Americans out of Wuhan a couple of weeks ago, so why not off this ship, where they have been trapped/sitting ducks?

I believe there was one in Japan related to the very ship we’re discussing.

But my point that nobody knows what’s happening or the scope of the risks here is valid.

Effective environmental decontamination methods have not been established yet. At this point you would have to burn the plane to decontaminate it for certain.

There’s also a couple of international naval treaties about quarantining those obviously sick.

There are long standing international treaties about plague ships that dictate what can be done. The bottom line for most of them is that a plague ship (which is what these cruise liners are now) are given safe anchorage in a harbor that can safely accommodate the ship in an isolated area, the ship *cannot* leave (in some cases, the host nation Navy will disable it with explosives or gunfire), and the passengers are *not* allowed to disembark other than for treatment if treatment is even possible. The plague ship *is* given humanitarian and medical supplies and such medical support as the hosting country feels it can afford to risk or as is volunteered. A perimeter around it is enforced - passengers are ONLY allowed off for treatment until the plague is cured or burns out. Four thousand years of seagoing plagues has taught us that this is how you keep disease from spreading and we have treaties accordingly.

There are no such treaties for patients on land.

What you said was really offensive and uncalled for. You should be ashamed to read into what I said as some sort of hope for a spreading of the disease. What I proposed was actually the best way to get them and that cruise ship here to the best medical care in the world, and those Americans aboard home where they belong.

Seriously, a special call-out to the asswipe? and then mocking my faith? Wow. Ok pal.

I’m not going to look for your post nor read your post on this thread.

The guy on the other thread Specifically said he wanted NYC and other places to be wiped out by the disease.

Even if I wasn’t in NYC, I’ve no desire to see millions die towards a political end.

We’ll beat them at the polls.

I will say that for myself and the other gentleman you posted to, it hurts to Constantly see people wanting horrible things to happen to our home towns. No matter what state they may be in.

Have a good night FRiend.

I appreciate those who brought up the disparaging remarks that I see here from time to time regarding major-liberal areas and the desire for them to be "wiped out" or see great tragedy. My oldest son & his family live in Boston-suburb Massachusetts, they are Christian/conservative and have many similar thinking friends. My 4-generation family lives in the Philly suburbs and "ditto" on the Christian/conservative for us. Sadly, my middle son (who works for a Federal agency in the DC area) is no longer Christian/conservative, but I just keep on praying for him & his wife. Plenty of conservative areas, even in California & NY, they're just overwhelmed by the numbers.

As for the original post - I can't imagine being trapped in a small, inside cabin on a ship for that many days, no matter how nice the accommodations (maybe with lots of books and some adult beverages). But it's also unsettling to think of the consequences of not enforcing a strict quarantine, esp. when considering how bad it sounds from the smuggled reports out of Wuhan.

It sounds like you have a great family. That’s awesome.

And yes, a ship with possible cases docked 22 minutes drive from my house in Bayonne :(

I hope it was handled really well!

And it does enrage me to see people want massive numbers of dead here.

Kinda thought this was a Christian leaning board to some extent.

Civil War is different. Unfortunately that’s kill or be killed.

Wishing disease is just horrible.

Thanks.

I guess that explains the difference in how the two situations (our ppl who were in Wuhan/China, flown home, vs our ppl on this ship) were/are being handled.

I wonder what changed the treaty process, for this particular ship, to now allow them to disembark/evacuate).

Quarantine time had been restarting, after each new case was confirmed.

We refuse to go on a cruise for many reasons but getting ill is the most major reason. I feel for those people.
