A U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas has admitted in federal court that he distributed instructions for making bombs with the intention that his teachings would be used to commit violent crimes.
Jarrett William Smith, 24, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to two counts of unlawfully distributing explosives information, U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release. Smith was a private when he transferred to Fort Riley in July. The infantry solider joined the Army in 2017.
Sentencing is scheduled for May 18, where Smith could face up to 20 years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count. However, the plea deal states that prosecutors and the defense will recommend three years of supervised release with no fine.
Smith used social media to advise others on how to construct improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, McAllister said. Among the explosives was a recipe for improvised napalm. Smith also told people he wanted to travel to Ukraine to fight with a violent, far-right paramilitary group.
The group was identified in court documents as the Azov Battalion.
Smiths goal was to create chaos, and he told an FBI agent that he distributed explosives information for the glory of his Satanist religion, the AP reported.
The grand jury indictment against Smith had included an additional charge of threatening interstate communication, alleging he threatened to burn down someones home. The plea agreement states that the threat charge will be dismissed at sentencing.

Meanwhile, Roger Stone deserves to die in Jail.
He should be executed, not jailed.
When a member of the military enacts in manners affording unwarranted violence upon the American citizenry, that member’s personal stated religion/spirituality is moot. Why? The member had violence in their bones, tempered or blunted is a non sequetor!
Hey! Where’s my copy???
All religions are equal you know, but only if you compare Satanism to Islam.
The guy is a Hell entusiast. Give him thirty years in Leavenworth.
3 years of supervised released???? Don’t understand how the prosecutors think that this is justice served.
Give him the max sentence and make them run concurrently. And charge him if anyone uses his instructions to commit crimes.
Ummm, I was kidding...
Take note that the US Naval Academy recently allowed space for Satan worshipers on academy grounds. From the Navy Times newspaper, October 2019: “Cmdr. Alana Garas, an academy spokeswoman, said Thursday the group has been provided a space to meet after a request was made by midshipmen.
An internal email was sent Oct. 8 to all midshipmen to announce the start of “satanic services.”
This is not the same military I retired from in 1994.
Srsly? This is the easiest thing to find online. It's all over the place.
Oh. That’s what happened to Bobby Hill.
I agree that this guy deserves the ultimate penalty, for acts devised against American citizens, and I would think both The Patriot Act and The Military Commissions Act would fit. However, like in Christianity, Satanism has its schisms, too, so your supposition might be inaccurate.
Clearly not and by default the people that serve in it aren’t of the same caliber of worthiness either.
Flame me for saying it, but when you continually lower your standards, you eventually get to the sewer level.
