They were probably given the option to resign, or be fired. If they violated DOJ guidelines, they could have been told to resign or face departmental charges, and lose their jobs anyway.
From what I have read, only one has actually left the DOJ. The other three resigned from the case but still work at the DOJ.
I have no doubt they resigned with their tails between their legs.
