After Germany's far-right scandal, Left party surges as Merkel's CDU sinks

A new poll carried out in the wake of a far-right scandal in Thuringia has shown impressive gains in support for the Left party and a significant tumble for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) in the eastern state. The poll was conducted by infratest dimap and commissioned by the public broadcaster MDR.

The CDU in has been accused of colluding with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Thuringia to get a conservative candidate elected state premier, despite the fact that his party — the laissez-faire Free Democrats (FDP) — barely cleared the 5% hurdle to get into Thuringia’s state parliament in a regional vote in October.

Support for the Left party surged to 39%, a full eight points up from its October result. The CDU sunk by about the same amount, going from 21.7% to 13%. The FDP, whose candidate for state premier, Thomas Kemmerich, was at the center of the scandal, fell to only 4%, meaning the liberals would not be allowed a seat in parliament if a vote were held today.

Perhaps most surprisingly, however, is that despite the outcry, support for the AfD improved slightly, from 23.4% to 24%. …

Which begs the question, what is far-right in that country?

I decided some time ago that I've bought my last German car. And,of course,I won't set foot in Germany again...or fly a German airline...or fly in an Airbus aircraft.

Europe is the land of my ancestors but I thank my Creator every day that they had the wisdom...and the courage...to leave.

Die Linke is the successor to the old East German SED.

As one who follows the European press with some regularity I've learned that in Europe "far right" means anyone who believes in national borders...the requirement that one work for his/her daily bread...and opposes Merkel's decision to let millions of illiterate moslems into Europe a few years back.

Another example is...anyone who supports Brexit or opposes today's European Union is "far right".

Nigel Farage is "far right".

Well, after my sister’s 2005 Jetta was nickeling and diming her after 140K miles, I figured it’s not a good idea to get one.

I know that “Ostdeutsche” means East German...what does the rest mean?

What they call “far right” is what Goebbels called “the German Left”.

The rest means “We are all now”.

Hence, “We are all East Germans now.”

I’ve never owned a VW.In recent years I’ve been buying Japanese and German cars and have come to conclude that Japanese cars are well designed, well built but boring and that German cars, while they spend more time in the shop than Japanese cars, are more exciting and satisfying when they’re running properly.

I don’t know what you mean by “boring”. Sorry if I can’t put my finger on the aesthetic, but I do value longevity and durability in a car over possible “excitement”.

I drive a 2001 VW Golf with 40,000 miles on her as my ‘Summer Car.’ It was my step-Mom’s car and she left it to me when she died. She only used it for trips to Church and the Liquor Store, LOL!

It IS starting to cost me more because when something breaks, it REALLY breaks. I owned a Jetta back in the late 80’s. NOTHING but trouble, but as you said, such a PLEASURE to drive!

Dad has had 17 VWs through the years. My first car was a VW Bug, Baby Blue, 1970. Still wish I had that car for the vintage value, now!

But, I won’t buy German again, either. Ford all the way for me. I love my Escape and am looking at buying an Explorer (used, low mileage) at the end of 2020. :)

afD is not “far right”. They simply don’t accept the socialist/internationalist Establishment view of things. They actually want to secure their borders, control immigration and uphold western liberal values. OMG! Clearly Hitler is about to come along any moment!

That’s simple. Whenever the German media says “far right” read “normal”.

Not in all cases. Just like the Dems and their media try to do over here, they lump the normal in with what Goebbels termed “the German Left”. They too readily conflate “nationalist” with “national-socialist”, when Goebbels made it plain that his party “despise(d) bourgeois nationalism”. And of course, real national-socialists sneak in to poison the well.

I see nothing national-socialistic in AfD’s manifesto, just to be clear. I don’t like their ideas with respect to direct democracy, among a few other things, but overall there’s nothing in there that resembles the kind of socialism that has crawled over Europe for close to two centuries.

Weimar redux: the threat of a commie takeover will push more people to the far right and the center will disappear.
