Former congressman Walsh ends 2020 GOP bid against Trump

WASHINGTON -- Former Illinois congressman Joe Walsh ended his Republican primary challenge to President Donald Trump on Friday, abandoning an effort that faced long odds and financial struggles from the start.

“I’m suspending my campaign, but our fight against the Cult of Trump is just getting started. I’m committed to doing everything I can to defeat Trump and his enablers this November.” Walsh said in a tweet.

Walsh had cast his ballot for Trump in 2016 and declared he would be “grabbing his musket” if the Republican Trump lost to Democrat Hillary Clinton. But Walsh eventually soured on Trump, deriding him as “nuts,” “cruel” and “incompetent.” He has also acknowledged that he helped “create” Trump through his own brand of “personal, ugly politics.”

Walsh faced fundraising hurdles and obstacles from the Republican Party from the start. A number of state parties canceled their primaries and other nominating contests in an effort to protect Trump from the fate of George H.W. Bush, the last one-term president who faced a serious primary challenger and subsequently lost his reelection bid. Last year, the Republican National Committee issued a nonbinding resolution to declare the party’s undivided support for Trump.

Walsh also failed to get his name on the ballot in some states, including Vermont, Mississippi and Walsh’s home state of Illinois.

“There were some times when I went over the line and said things to be a little too provocative,” Walsh told a crowd at a college convention in New Hampshire in January.

Walsh’s singular campaign focus was criticizing Trump.

Joe Walsh is a zero. But he did have one hit song, “Life’s been good to me so far” and its neat that in it, he sings “My Maserati does 185”.

He may just have been in it to get his bills paid and sell merchandise.

Maybe he bought up all the unsold buttons from Eagles' guitarist Joe Walsh's 1980 joke campaign for the presidency and thought he could unload them on voters.

His concession speech was pretty good:

I had a campaign, I put it on ice
Ain't never got votes, it woulda be nice
I lived in hotels, gave speeches in halls
I had Bill Kristol pay for it all

They say I'm crazy but I had a good time
(Everybody say RINO, oh yeah, RINO)
I'm just spreading fake news that Trump committed a crime
Life's been good to me so far

The effort made Walsh lose his national talk radio show but he said he was “done with talk radio”

(by Robert Feder 8-27-19)
Now that Joe Walsh has announced his quixotic bid to challenge President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination in 2020, the former Illinois congressman says he’s sacrificing his career as a radio talk show host.

Walsh has been holding forth on WIND 560-AM, the Salem Media news/talk station, since 2013 — the year after he lost his reelection bid following one term in Congress. His local show aired from 5 to 7 p.m. weekdays. His national show, syndicated by Salem Radio Network, aired from 8 to 11 p.m. weekdays.

“I’m done with talk radio, and that makes me sad,” Walsh said Sunday on “Beyond the Beltway with Bruce DuMont.” “But to me this is a bigger mission. I’ve got to do what I can to make sure this guy can’t be reelected and . . . to try to help save the Republican party. Trump has destroyed the Republican party.”

On Monday Salem Radio Network gave affiliates 30-days notice that it was cancelling Walsh’s show to avoid running afoul of the FCC’s Equal Time Rule. “This announcement does not affect Walsh’s local program airing on AM 560 The Answer in Chicago, however Walsh’s program will have to be removed as soon as he becomes a viable and legal candidate for president,” according to the company.

Walsh acknowledged that his outspoken criticism of Trump already had cost him support among some affiliates.

“The easiest thing for me to do is to just line up with everybody else in conservative media and sing this president’s praises,” he told DuMont. “If I did that, I’d still have a radio show, I’d have great ratings, and every Republican would love me. I truly believe that this president is a danger to the country. He has no respect for the rule of law. He believes he’s a dictator.

So much for the saying that the top three finishers in the Iowa caucuses get their cards punched for New Hampshire.

Joe Biden got less than 15% of the votes in Iowa despite the media constantly saying he was the front runner...he should pack it in.

In 2008 McCain was dead after Iowa ...

Then then the rats bussed people from NYC to New Hampshire to vote from him in the NH primary.

He won NH and went on to become the R candidate.

I always wondered why the rats wanted McCain to run ... hhmmm ...
