The Wuhan coronavirus seems to have a low fatality rate, and most patients make full recoveries. Experts reveal why it's causing panic anyway.

The outbreak of a new coronavirus has sparked fear and anxiety around the world.

The pneumonialike virus, which originated in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 9,700 people and killed 213.

So far, the virus does not seem to be as deadly as SARS, which killed 774 people from 2002 to 2003. SARS had a mortality rate of 9.6%, whereas about 2% of people infected with the new coronavirus have died. But the number of people infected after one month has already surpassed the SARS outbreak's eight-month total

Many patients with coronavirus have already made full recoveries. According to Chinese officials, most of those who've died were elderly or had other ailments that compromised their immune systems. Public-health experts say that for the most part, panic over the Wuhan coronavirus outside of China is unproductive and unwarranted. The public should take precautions to avoid getting sick, but the most effective preventative measures are everyday actions like increased handwashing and not touching your face.

Amira Roess, a professor of global health and epidemiology at George Mason University, told Business Insider that fear would not stop the spread of the virus and could cause negative social impacts.

More fudged numbers based on the numbers the Chinese Communist Party wants to release - rumor is bodies are being cremated to hide the truth as they did in 1989

How much hospitalization is required to keep the patients from dying?

The Chinese completely denied the beginning of the SARS epidemic that killed many. Then was discovered to have falsified reports.

Several earlier epidemics were traced back to China after the Chinese lied.

Do we now have to believe they quarantine millions in Wuhan but only less than 300 died?

whereas about 2% of people infected with the new coronavirus have died.

And according to Chinese reports, the mortality has occurred mostly is in people over 60 years old, ie) those with other illnesses and weakened immune systems - and shows typical mortality patterns for other types of flu (albeit normal flu viruses have mortality rates of 0.1-0.2%).

I hope it’s true it has a low mortality rate but I don’t believe the Chinese government.

I’ll believe more about the mortality rate in a week or two after non commie governments start turning in stats. Obviously flu is going to kill some people sadly.

So, 213 people have died, and 171 have recovered...the remainder of the 9000 are still sick. How does one calculate a “low” fatality rate?

I was wondering about the recovery rate. Not all flu like viruses are fatal, in fact, most are not.
I was far more worried a few years back during the Ebola dramas. Somehow, even that did not spread and mushroom in high fatalities inside the United States. Ebola can kill very quickly under certain conditions.

I did updates on the 2014 ebola outbreak on the thread linked below. Reality turned out to be way different than projections. The updates are the last posts on the thread.

Annie Lenox and the Eurythmics sang this song in 1985——

Would I Lie To You?
Would I lie to you?
Would I lie to you honey?
Now would I say something that wasn’t true?
I’m asking you sugar
Would I lie to you?

My friends, know what’s in store.
I won’t be here anymore.
I’ve packed my bags
I’ve cleaned the floor.
Watch me walkin’.
Walkin’ out the door.

“Do we now have to believe they quarantine millions in Wuhan but only less than 300 died?”

And, the Chinese are building several hospitals just for this. The idea that only a few have died is ridiculous. If that were the case more will die as a result of the quarantine.

Sorry but “Business Insider” is a left wing, anti Trump propaganda site who would readily propagate Chinese government lies. This coronavirus must be really hurting the Chinese economy and is a threat to the Party. BTW how many non genetic Asiatics have contracted and died from this disease. One would think that the Westerners who live and work in Wusan have been exposed and if susceptible would be sick by now. Any documentation that Westerners have the same susceptibility as genetic Chinese? Such information would be very politically incorrect to report.

Or.....do the Chinese want to give off the impression that it is worse than it really is, to collapse the US economy and take Trump with it?

My guess is that the novel coronavirus will turn out to be a short story. We can hope, anyway.

Obviously the Hillary / Blame Trump Either Way brigade, didn't get the memo about this afternoon's news conference.

You know, from the White House. Where Medical Doctors will now be advising the TSA, and foreigners suspected of carrying the virus will NOT BE ALLOWED INTO THE COUNTRY.

Apparently, but not announced by the White House, the CDC's website is saying 23-32% of those hospitalized will go to icu and 11–15% of those hospitalized will die.

Because fatality rate means how many die OUT OF HOW MANY WERE SICK.

Good God, why is this falsehood of comparing recovered to dead propagating as meaningful?

Hubei province
(including Wuhan) Cases 7,153 Deaths 249 Serious 956 Critical 338

If half of those critical and serious die that will leave a fatality rate of over 10% if most eventually die it will be closer to 20%.

A lot.

Some of these people fly an ICU bed for 3 or 4 weeks.

How many ICU beds do we have in this country...?
