Actually, the tsunami could come from any direction - usually they are caused by a large underwater landslide which could occur anywhere in the area. It depends on the geography more than the location of the epicenter.
As for the cruise ships, they will be safer the further from land they are. Tsunamis are not these huge cresting waves that you could surf on an aircraft carrier, they are typically more like supersized storm surges.
25+ years ago they closed schools in Honolulu because of a Tsunami Warning.. I believe it hit Oahu (North Shore) at 2 centimeters in height... !
