January 28, 1915: US Coast Guard is Formed By an Act of Congress

On January 28, 1915, an Act of Congress created the United States Coast Guard out of the combination of The Revenue Cutter Service and the US Life-Saving Service. This new branch of the military was placed under the Treasury Department, to be used by the Department of Defense in time of war. Today, this law enforcing and life saving maritime force is under the direction of the Department of Homeland Security, and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy as seen necessary by the President.

Back re @ Pearl Harbor, the CG had gone to the USN; one of their own (CG) ended up w/a MOH for evacuating a Marine name of Chesty Puller and his Marines down a river on Guadalcanal.

My mom’s uncle enlisted in the CG in 1917. In a few months transferred to US Navy due to WW1 . Retired from CG at the 3nd of WW2.
I like Larry Csonka’s appreciation to the Coast Guard swimmer who rescued him from the Bearing Sea a few years ago.
He gave the swimmer an autographed football which read: “THANKS FOR PULLING MY ASS OUT OF THE SEA. LARRY CSONKA #39”.
Gave the Coast Guard 28 years of my life, loved every single minute of it. Always felt like I was doing something meaningful, of value. Saving lives and property, protecting commerce and the maritime industry. Things have changed a bit since I retired in 1994. Primary job when I was active duty saving lives, once the CG was moved to DHS they became more Law Enforcement. Many of my former shipmates that were still in after 9/11 said it was not the same Coast Guard.

The CG is a still very valuable.
You have to go out; you don’t have to come back. That’s what a USCG trainer was said to have told his recruits.
