BEIJING: President Xi Jinping said China was facing a "grave situation" as the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak jumped to 41, overshadowing celebrations of the Chinese New Year that began on Saturday (Jan 25).
China also announced further transport restrictions.
With more than 1,400 people infected worldwide, most of them in China, Hong Kong declared a virus emergency, scrapped celebrations and restricted links to mainland China.
Australia confirmed its first four cases on Saturday, Malaysia confirmed four and France reported Europe's first cases on Friday, as health authorities around the world scrambled to prevent a pandemic.
The United States is arranging a charter flight on Sunday to bring its citizens and diplomats back from Wuhan, the central Chinese city that is the epicentre of the outbreak, the Wall Street Journal reported.
In Hong Kong, with five confirmed cases, the city's leader Carrie Lam said flights and high speed rail trips between the city and Wuhan will be halted. Schools in Hong Kong that are currently on Chinese New Year holidays will remain closed until Feb 17.
Xi held a politburo meeting on Saturday on measures to fight the "accelerating" outbreak, state television reported.
The death toll in China has risen to 41, authorities reported on Saturday, up from 26 a day earlier. As of 6pm local time, 1,372 people in China had been infected with the virus - traced to a seafood market in Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.
The virus has also been detected in Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Nepal, and the United States.

I think I could randomly pick just about any substance and find more people affected than this drama-bug.
The real numbers that the Chinese leadership are seeing must be *far* worse than what they are publicly stating. Regimes like this never make statements like this otherwise.

WUHAN: Police at a roadblock on the outskirts of Wuhan turned away cars trying to leave the virus-stricken city on Saturday (Jan 25), as other anxious residents trapped inside spent the Chinese New Year stocking up on masks and medical supplies.
Authorities have prevented anyone from leaving Wuhan, the city of 11 million people at the heart of the viral outbreak which has so far infected nearly 1,300 people and killed 41 others.
AFP saw a steady trickle of cars approaching the roadblocks around 20km east of the city centre on Saturday morning, only for police in fluorescent jackets wearing masks to tell them to turn around.
Quick. They should send in Greta to save humanity. Oops, that won’t work. She wants to save the planet, not humans.
I think the thing that worries everyone is that it’s far worse than what they are saying.
For Xi to say this...there’s no way it’s not worse.
Send her in anyway.
So...The Americans left, right? They had better be quarantined, if so.
Maybe, but I think these drama-bugs are used about once a year to move other more politically interesting things off the front page.
Yes, the death toll of 41 has been the same for a couple of days now, they haven’t released any updated information.
Think how bad it must be for him to admit ANYTHING about it.
Yeah, what exactly is going on with all this drama! More people probably died in Baltimore and Chicago last night and this thing is being framed as if humanity is on the edge of being wiped out.
STOP.
After the past 3 plus years, I can believe that.
The thing is death aren’t increased by 15 a day and then another 15 the next day..
They tend to grow exponentially until quarantine kicks in and works..if it does.
True, but the drama-bugs tend to move off the front page without even killing 10,000 people. The exponential thing tends to stop at a few hundred or a few thousand worldwide.
It is in their favor to quietly scatter rather in the US rather than face 24 hour news reporters and tv cameras peering into their house windows and demanding a quote. Plus who would allow them back to work? Or to a store or movie theater?
News could then say “Of the Americans who returned only 10 are cooperating with health authorities. Whereabouts of the others is unknown.”
Similar to a local news I saw on toxic contamination from a company in a woman’s yard, among others. She said “The guy from the authorities said through my screen door my yard tested acceptable and I was out of danger. He was wearing a yellow hazmat suit and talking through a mask microphone. I did not feel reassured.”
Sorry I would not bring these people back, they have been exposed. Leave them there until the crisis has passed.
