Senate Democrats are dismissing chatter about attempts at an agreement that would guarantee former national security adviser John Bolton testifies in President Trump's impeachment trial in exchange for former Vice President Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden also testifying.
The idea has been floated by conservatives, who argue there should be "witness reciprocity." But Democrats shot down such talk, saying Trump allies are demanding an irrelevant witness in exchange for one with firsthand knowledge of Trump's actions.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), asked about a potential swap, argued that "witnesses should have something to do with and direct knowledge of the charges against the president."
"You know, we don’t need to have witnesses that have nothing to do with this that are trying to distract Americans from the truth," Schumer said.
Pressed again if he would cut a deal on witnesses, Schumer added, “right now we haven’t heard them wanting any witnesses at all.”
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the lead impeachment manager, called the former vice president's son "irrelevant and immaterial."
"This isn't like some fantasy football trade. ... This isn't we'll offer you this, if you give us that," he told reporters.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), asked about a potential deal during an interview with MSNBC, indicated he would not support a Biden-for-Bolton swap, calling Hunter Biden a "total sideshow."
"Focusing on Hunter Biden just furthers the entire scheme ... Trump put forward," Van Hollen said.
The Washington Post, citing unnamed sources, said there was a discussion among some Democrats about supporting such a deal but senators quickly distanced themselves from the story.
Sen. Christopher Coons (D-Del.) said such a deal "would mean trading a relevant witness who should be testifying for a witness who has nothing to do with the charges against the president."

True. The Salamie hit was authorized in May 2019. Bolton might be in favor of that. He’s a wild card. We know what the Biden’s, Clinton’s, and Obama’s are. If you can’t raise or call you fold your hand. Poker is a hard teacher.

The decision whether or not Bolton testifies is not theirs, either, unless the courts say so. If the WH wins the executive privilege case, that’s that. No deal.
Anyway, when will they wise up. They keep bringing on witnesses that they think will finally do in Trump, and at best it fizzles, at worst it blows up in their faces. Are they reading the ACME Impeachment Guide for Dummies?

My point was borderline sarcasm. If the democrats really thought that Bolton would help them, but Hunter would be irrelevant, why would they be so against agreeing? It shows their hypocrisy. They don't want witnesses. They want the Senate to dismiss, and then tell the public the process was unfair and that Trump would have been proven guilty if allowed to call witness and subpoena documents.
When Ted Cruz floated this idea of witness swapping, he basically acknowledged that the Democrats have POWER in this proceeding. That was a huge mistake, it was effectively a cave. Our guys just don’t have that killer instinct to put the boot on the throat. The Rats are better at this game than us.
If Dems thought that Bolton was their key to kicking Trump out of office they would easily turn over Hunter to talk in front of the Senate..I think the Dems know that Bolton wont be the star witness they hoped for
Hard way to make your point. However, they don’t want anything they can’t control, so the Mitch needs to stay on top. The Dems don’t have a magic key. Best they can hope is this is thrown out. The GOP will oblige them because they are as dirty. We all know Trump ain’t, in my view anyway. The fat lady started singing yesterday. Be well. :)

This is interesting — getting Bolton would have been something of a coup for the Democrats. Which means they must be absolutely terrified of what Hunter and/or Joe Biden would actually have to say under oath....
How do Dems know what Hunter is going to say? How do they know he has nothing to do with the charges nor any pertinent knowledge? He’s not been deposed has he? Schiff needs to be deposed as well. Don’t forget that liar.
The very last things want is for Hunter Biden to be called to the witness stand and remind Americans who the real criminal is.
The both of them would just lie.
