I thought The Empire Strikes Back was the best, but the first one always has the “magic” of being just that...the first one, that the others can never replace.
I could literally write a book about all the scientific inaccuracies, plot holes, inconsistencies, contradictions, and just plain stupid things in Star Wars. But I would leave The Empire Strikes Back out of it, because it’s one of my favorite movies.
But it was the first one ("The Force Awakens") that was (even) more formulaic than the following two.
"The Force Awakens" was a weak remake of "A New Hope" - what they call a "soft reboot." Poor waif on desert planet makes friends with droid carrying secret plans, hooks up with Han Solo, is "introduced to the Force," confronts big mask-wearing baddy, joins "Resistance," makes planet-buster go "kablooie!"
Regards,
I saw the original, as a kid.
Greedo had the gun on him, and there was the dead or alive comment, implying he’d take han to Jabba dead or alive, and had his gun on him the entire time.
So han shot him.
Tell me its not self defense. Han took him out, fair and square, to a guy who had a weapon on him ready to fire.
Thanks. It has been a while.
It is self defense, but that isn’t the point of the “Han shot first” meme. Re-read my last post. Or don’t. Whichever.
In my humble opinion they already had a script from the 1980s that would have worked wonderfully, been cheaper to put together and still have MORE compelling characters.
Admiral Thrawn.
A simple case - Skywalker has killed the emperor, thousands of troops and now goes off to the wilds to set up his academy.
The remnants of the republic come back and they are corrupt and power-hungry.
And Admiral Thrawn comes in and creates a benevolent empire - and now the new republic persecutes him.
So the roles get reversed - who do we root for?
The franchise is 43 years old. Stick a fork in it already..amazing how characters a million years ago had empowerment...and gender issues too. Amazing. Need to figure out WHY. Or I will go blind.
Some genius decided the bet the final episodes of the franchise on a thick necked woman with one facial expression, and dress her in dirty gray mummy bandages. Brilliant.
Beaten by a Mary Sue.
I pointed out on old threads that “Rogue One” was made only to correct an oversight in earlier films; it had white male scientists create the Death Star instead of the alien things that did so in the goofy prequels. I watched “Rogue One” because some FReepers indicated it was worthwhile, and saw right through its message.
There is no shortage of YouTube clips showing unsold Star Wars merchandise on store shelves and in discount bins; I guess they didn’t realize their target demographic (oppressed otherized people) don’t buy that sh!t - and the fan base of the 1970s and 80s won’t either.
For a good laugh, watch the Hilariocity review of the Star Wars Holiday Special on YouTube...
Incredibly, I still see a lot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle” stuff on Halloween; I remember the first movie in theaters, and the arcade video game decades ago, but know nothing else about it - though there is still some kind of cartoon on TV.
I guess they didn’t stray as far from their origins as “Star Wars”...
A while back I bought a Galactic Empire patch for a cap; among the reviews, someone had posted: “Palpatine was right.”
Brilliant!
Here's is an interesting YouTube clip of how Lucas' original movie sucked (confirmed by this friends Steven Spielburg and Brian De Palma, and it was saved in the editing room.
When I said the first movie I meant “A New Hope”, not the first of this last trilogy.
