An Aide’s View: Jimmy Carter as ‘the Anti-Trump’
nytimes ^ | 01/14/2020 | Stuart E. Eizenstat

In “Donald Trump Is a Hostage to 1979” (Sunday Review, Jan. 12), Stephen Metcalf argues that President Trump’s decision to kill Qassim Suleimani stems from his obsession with being the anti-Jimmy Carter. But the image of Jimmy Carter as a weak president defies reality.

As a former submarine officer, Mr. Carter considered a naval blockade of Iran’s ports, but his national security and military advisers were concerned that it would enhance the influence of the Soviet Union and lead to the hostages being returned in coffins.

As president he reversed the decline in post-Vietnam War defense spending. All the weapons systems that President Reagan used to help bring down the Soviet Union were greenlighted by Mr. Carter. Even his conservative critics applauded his tough response to the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan and his threat of military force to block any Soviet drive to the Persian Gulf.

Sorry, Mr. Ambassador, but perceptions equal reality.

Jimmah Carter is perceived as our worst Tnediserp and a disaster to our foreign policy.

Pres. Donald Trump is perceived by anyone with sense as a strong leader & restorer of America’s prestige abroad.

Them’s the breaks, cookie pusher.

Not carter. Andy Jackson.

President Trump is a big admirer of Jackson. And in many ways emulates him.

p.s. Old Hickory would have beat Nancy to a pulp with his walking stick by now.

From the same @$$hats who peddle the canard that everything bad that happened when ObaMao was in office was the fault of George W. Bush and everything good that has happened since D.J. Trump took office is to ObaMao’s credit . . .

Good God....

Yeeears ago (and I think it was here), I read an excerpt of some book on Reagan, where he described his first meeting with the Joint Chiefs after being elected. He wanted to know what they needed, right now, that he could push for. He was thinking they wanted some piece of brand new technology that had been blown off under Carter...instead, one of the Chiefs slammed his hand on the table and said “Refill the bins, Mr. President! REFILL THE BINS!”

He was a bit stunned to realize the Chief was saying that, at that moment, they didn’t have parts or funding even to support what they had.

Jimmah Cathah was a wimp as President and cancelled several weapons systems programs including the development of the neutron bomb, at the same time loaning a Cray super computer to the Soviets to help them with their industrial/manufacturing industries especially for their automaker. Of course the Soviets immediately shifted its purpose to military weapons systems development,

If anything, he prolonged the cold war by a few years.

I force myself to read the NYT headlines almost every day so i can have some sense of what the enemy is thinking. In this case, I have to say - the Times has it exactly right: Carter is the ant-Trump, and Trump is the anti-Carter.

Carter: submit in humiliation while our Embassy personnel are taken hostage (just like Obama, who probably laughed watching American soldiers disarmed and kneeling at the direction of the same Iranians).

Trump: you killed Americans, so I’m killing your most talented leader.

Thank you. As said by someone on this board several days or weeks ago, “that’s what I voted for.”

Insofar as Carter is the face of institutional anti-Semitism, and impotence in facing the threat posed by Islamists, sure...
