In his state budget proposal, Gov. Gavin Newsom is calling on judicial authorities to create a statewide program that will allow some of California’s poorer drivers to have their traffic citation amounts cut by 50 percent or more.

Which will include 100% of the one million illegal aliens he gave driver's licenses to.

Anyway it is a violation of the 14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause.

"nor shall any State deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws".

State officials who set those fees are now acknowledging that the high amounts are threatening the financial stability of lower-income drivers who can’t afford to pay those amounts.

Most of the posters here are complaining about the putative triviality of these traffic offenses - but I find the unequal application of law much more worrisome!

Regards,

It’ll be the poor, the homeless and the illegals that will be the hardest hit here.

Therefore, they WON’T enforce this (bleep).

Do you really think that “lower-income drivers” will ever be forced to pay the fee? The ones who get licenses and are not citizens?

Anarcho-tyranny. You will get the fine. Criminals will get the break.

"State officials [???] who set those fees […]"

Those “state officials” better be elected officials imo.

Also, as a side note to this thread, please consider the following.

"Turning right on a red light without fully stopping will cost you $500 in California."

Regarding politically correct global warming, doesn’t coming to a full stop and then accelerating from that full stop have a larger carbon footprint than accelerating from a rolling stop?

The problem with rolling stops is that a driver in a hurry might misjudge traffic and get in fender bender with right-of-way traffic.

California’s silly policy reform of the week. And many states are scratching their heads wondering why the crime rate is exploding.

Cheaper to pack-up and move out of that CA hellhole, than pay those idiotic fines.

Something very similar is happening in Florida. Evidently, many can’t afford to pay traffic fines which are fairly high. The State then suspends their license. They still need to drive even with a suspended license.

The result? A lot of hit and run accidents. Florida ranks among the top 3 states for hit and runs.

Orlando certainly has a lot of these accidents, many resulting in fatalities.

The Orlando Sentinel (which just proudly partnered with the NYT to pick up their articles) recommends raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. No consideration was given to lowering the fines.

The $15 wage hike will likely come from an amendment to the Constitution which is the left’s favorite way of passing crap that can’t pass in the Legislature.

Its so clearly obvious that traffic fines focus on making money and not on safety. California is the worst.

The police stalk drivers on all kinds of levels.

The 14th amendment talks about the equal protection of the laws. This isn’t about protection of the laws—this is about equal harassment of the laws.

Equal protection under the law is long gone in California.
