I think Iran wants a lever. An embassy hostage situation would be great. Whereas Trump is signaling the possibility of a repeat of Praying Mantis.

So Iran is probing for a breakthrough without triggering a large scale US response. Note that widespread suffering in Venezuela hasn’t triggered a revolution. It’s not clear that deprivation in Iran would topple the regime. It is merely being starved of resources to continue its nuclear program. For now, that will have to be enough.
If so, Democrats are greatly saddened. :(

I do. Iran has really screwed the pooch this time. Trump kills less that 10 of the worst of the worst Iranians (people who don’t hesitate to murder their own citizens in the streets) whose demise will be celebrated by most Iranians. The Iranian regime, in response, manages to kill over 200 of its citizens (between those crushed in street stampedes and shot down while flying). I’m sure the Iranian dictatorship is puzzling how to explain this all to their citizens.

Yep, Iran is broke, majority of the people hate their leaders and most likely shot down the airliner through either incompetent people or lousy equipment or both.
70% of the people are under age 30 and hate the theocracy.
Saudi is finally allowing more freedoms albeit slowly but it is happening. Iran will have to follow.
They also admitted to violating the terms of the nuclear deal which means the 5 remaining countries have to apply sanctions. Brilliant!

Iran is not a monolith. There are moderate elements in the Iranian regime. There are hardline elements like Soleimani, who have largely controlled things in Iran for the past 40 years. His death changes the equation significantly. Soleimani was aligned with the mullahs who may, in truth, be mostly figure heads. They may have taken orders from him rather than the other way around. And perhaps the biggest player in Iranian politics are the Deep State/Globalists from outside of Iran who have financed and kept this radical terrorist regime alive for 40 years in order to destabilize the world for their own ends.

indeed. i’ve been thinking about that, and suspect Iran went on Defcon 5 or whatever right after sulymani was killed, and as a consequence some poorly-trained incompetent accidentally mis-operated a SAM battery protecting the Tehran airport by temporarily putting it into some kind of automatic or test mode, and a SAM missile took off after the Ukrainian 737 right after that flight left the Tehran airport ...
hell, the Soviet Union accidentally nuked a half of one of their states with a badly designed nuclear reactor operated by arrogant and incompetent fools ... Iran actually got off pretty lightly compared to that ...
Nah - Trump is signalling that if they keep killing Americans, they may as well have their suicide letters typed and they believe him....and also know our intelligence is good enough to catch most attempts at diversion.
For the first time since Carter handed Iran over to the hard core muzzies, Iran is woke enough to actually fear the President.
