I don’t actually think it would be advantageous for any general to wear expensive bling.
Generals are generally the guys of the poor-fitting suits, dull haircuts, bad dye jobs, no neck or refinement, etc.
And that’s what works for them.
A ring that chunky may have had a function besides looking cheesy. Maybe it works like a locket and contains cyanide or some such thing in case he got cornered. Maybe it is used to impress a mark on communications sent by courier to guarantee authenticity like old fashioned wax seal.
