Actually, your thoughts are not out of line.
A replay of the Carter hostage fiasco would (I believe) bring down President Trump.
Can you just imagine “Trump: America Held Hostage Day 198” on every network every day?
It just occurred to me. I mean the Rats have tried everything else.
The big difference in the US favor is that 2020 Baghdad is not 1979 Tehran.
Back then, it was nigh impossible to coordinate an on-the-scene response to the crisis due to the distances involved in overflying unfriendly territory. We tried and it failed spectacularly because the plan left no room for error. Ross Perot was hailed a hero at the time because he found a way and assembled a team to extricate a pair of employees out of Iran.
But today, we have assets and allies throughout that region. The US embassy in Baghdad (and Iraq) is well-within our sphere of operational reach (Benghazi in Libya was, too). We just put a brigade of paratroopers in downtown Baghdad. And with an ease and speed that was unthinkable in 1979.
It took 40 years, but the BS games of the ayatollahs and tin-horn despots have finally brought the US in as close neighbors. We’ve shown our ability and resolve. They can no longer be sure that their next great provocation won’t be their last. Why now would they risk it?
