Trump also said the short-term pain would lead to long term gains through new trade agreements and policy. Trump has also stepped in to mitigate the short-term damage when appropriate.
They can spin it all they want, but he is playing for the long game and has said so in speech and demonstrated it with action.

Unfair tariffs by other trade nations is the only reason for Tariffs by President Trump. No tariffs by either side would be fair. For years our politicians have sold us out in accepting these trade deals. It has cost us Billions of dollars in trade. These bad trade deals were either due to incompetence or corruption. Makes you wonder how many bribes were paid along the way?
