In California, New Year Brings New Regulations for Businesses Laws on privacy and classifying independent contractors take effect Jan. 1 in the Golden State

On Jan. 1, California will usher in a host of largely progressive laws that will mean major changes for consumers, workers and businesses, big and small.

The laws, passed by a solidly Democratic legislature and governor, include first-of-their-kind consumer-privacy protections, a sea change in the way employers classify independent contractors and a cap on rent increases in a state grappling with sky-high housing prices.

For many businesses, the new laws will require significant changes to how they collect data on consumers and whether they pay workers overtime or provide paid sick leave, changes that aren’t required by any or most of the other 49 states.

...

California will also become the first state in the nation to extend health-care coverage to some low-income adults who are in the country illegally. As of Jan. 1, people between the ages of 19 and 26 will be eligible for benefits under Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid program, regardless of immigration status. That measure was part of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s first budget last year.

Mr. Newsom is poised to release his newest budget proposal next week.

The new cap on rent increases will prevent most landlords from raising rents more than 5% annually for the next decade and is expected to apply to an additional two million apartments statewide not currently covered by rent control. Apartments built in the past 15 years are exempt, as are most single-family homes.

Some landlords have responded by employing no-fault evictions, a move that will also become more difficult in the new year, and say it could prompt them to raise rents more frequently.

Some officials say more needs to be done—particularly around denser development near transit centers and streamlining of local and state regulations that can slow home construction—to alleviate the housing shortage and combat homelessness.

SB 149 bans the sale of cosmetic products, sold primarily in the United States, when the ingredients have been tested on animals. The law does not apply to products sold internationally, where animal testing is required by law.

Looks like the globalist lobbyists had a field day with this one, which certainly disadvantages domestic startups in the cosmetics industry.

The law has a lot of carve-outs. That’s actually one reason why it is being sued on violations of equal rights and interstate commerce. Because it does affect content writers but not photographers, does affect Uber drivers delivering items but not the MLM salespeople who sold the items being delivered.

I had a variety of Dems blow up at me for bringing this up: they’re so busy hating on Trump that almost no one reported on a bad law that took a year to pass. You had time to review the legislation and push back, but no, orange man bad dominated the discussion.

The immediate impact is that crowdsourcing workers in other states are getting a boost while California contractors are shut out. Very few California contractors can afford to set up an LLC to continue working. It will increase demand for foreign contractors, too, whether writing product descriptions or code.

The ONLY phrase I EVER want to hear a Democrat say is “I was wrong! I’m voting for Trump!”

Hate is a powerful emotion!

When LIEberals show their hatred towards the rest of us on a second/minute/hour/day/week/month/quarterly/semi-annual/annual/24/7/365 basis, it becomes increasingly difficult for me to think of them as anything other than “anti-American traitors.”

This group of people who are spending EVERY waking minute of their lives trying to destroy the greatest country ever conceived in the history of the world are beneath contempt!

It is one thing to work within the system to improve it; it is quite another to work to DESTROY the system through deliberate and intentional lies, deceit, law-breaking and other nefarious means!

OUT! YOU DAMNED DEMOCRATS! OUT, I SAY!

BEGONE!

LOVE AMERICA, OR LEAVE!
