Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), a top ally of President Trump, announced Thursday morning that he will retire from Congress at the end of his term.

Meadows, a four-term lawmaker who represents part of western North Carolina, said in a statement that he “struggled” with leaving what he has long considered a “temporary job.”

“For everything there is a season. After prayerful consideration and discussion with family, today I’m announcing that my time serving Western North Carolina in Congress will come to a close at the end of this term,” Meadows said. “This was a decision I struggled with greatly.”

The seat should remain in the GOP but it's hard to believe that the replacement will be someone of Meadows' caliber. Supposedly he's going to work on the Trump re-election.

Well, many of us HAVE claimed to desire having term limits. Here is a man and several other reps who are limiting themselves

Says a lot about their character, actually.

Why is it we end up with people who don’t hang on to power for the sake of holding on to power?

And yet we picture them to posses integrity.

It is TRULY a principled decision if you ARE the right person for the job and you decide to no longer stay there.

If nothing else, Donald J Trump has taught us the power of "just a guy" coming in and making the contents of the China shop look like a sand pile.

A day after having my gut punched I feel good.

“...what he has long considered a “temporary job.

What The Framers considered temporary jobs.

Poor timing. He should have waited to make this announcement AFTER the impeachment circus.

“Politics will no longer fix the mess we’re in.”

We here know this. Are we of this opinion a big enough group to affect the necessary change?

NC was redistricted for 2020. I wonder how much his district has changed and whether a Rep is a lock.

Locking arms with a group of posters you don't know isn't a good idea, so decide what's best for yourself & family.

It's rare to find an intelligent person of principle in the Congress. I totally share your sentiment, and wish him the very best.

Actually his “timing” gives the NC Republicans plenty of time to recruit a good candidate. It’s probably mission impossible to recruit one as good as Meadows but at least a good Trump loyalist.

By the way, I expect we’ll see more of Meadows in the future.

There is nothing more the House GOP can do "officially" in this particular impeachment. His work is done. He can always make public statements.

Honestly, I don’t blame him, he served and deserves to leave the swamp and all those awful people.DC isn’t worth it but America is.I wish him luck. The Democrats don’t retire because they are puppet losers that have nothing on their own.

This. 10/10 this. That’s why the Capitol was built in a literal swamp. It was supposed to be very unpleasant, especially in the summer.

A patriot served his country for a few years and then returned to the Real World. They went back to their farms and businesses.

If the Framers made one miscalculation, it was the overestimation of *us*.
