Depends on what is being subpoena’d. If it involves national security matters, or if it involves attorney-client matters, or such, it would require a SHOW CAUSE for the need. Fishing expeditions can never be any good and that is why we have SCOTUS. They subpoenaed tax and loan records that date from prior to Trump becoming president.

This so called articles of impeachment is based on Ukraine phone call, and even ordinary people can surmise what connection does it have with Trump’s tax returns?

In addition, there is no law on the books that a president must release his/her tax returns for public consumption.
