I just ask for paper grocery bags. The products sit nicer in them and they stack better.
At home I use them to line trash cans, start charcoal chimneys, carry items to other locations, and . . . I always bring a handful when traveling to Calizuela.

In Calizuela, we can buy the paper bags for 10 cents. They have a lot uses as you noted.
I love the old grocery paper bags, BUT they don’t have the lovely handles on them.
Handles on a paper bag will add to the cost that stores won’t want to bear. It can’t be done w/o heavy-duty paper and staples. That’s extra manufacturing effort.
Paper bags are also biodegradable and paper pulp is a renewable resource.
Shoprite switched to shallow flimsy paper bags at least 10 years ago. The plastic bags aren’t good either.
Trader Joe’s has great bags and they double them.
