Is Colombia a ticking time bomb?

Next year, the number of Venezuelans fleeing their country will overtake the Syrian exodus. To date, more than 4 million have left. One-third of these refugees and migrants are sheltering in Colombia, which has maintained a very generous open-door policy.

However, the strain is beginning to show. We were recently in Colombia, where a senior international official told us, “Colombia is a now a ticking time bomb.”

This description may be hyperbole, but the country indeed appears headed towards a tipping point. Such an outcome would exacerbate the regional humanitarian crisis triggered by Venezuela’s collapse.

It could also threaten the long-term investment made by the United States in Colombia’s prosperity. All this should prompt the United States and others to act now before it’s too late. Six trends explain why:

The crisis in Venezuela shows no signs of abating

The political situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate. In September, Norwegian-sponsored negotiations between the Maduro government and the opposition led by Juan Guaidó were declared dead. The economy is in freefall. Officially, there are 1.4 million Venezuelans already in Colombia, but the real figure is likely between 1.6 and 2 million. This outflow of Venezuelans will likely double in the coming year. At this rate, Venezuelans could shortly make up a tenth of Colombia’s population.

“Colombia is a now a ticking time bomb.”

It has been since the fifties.

Why should now be any different?

Short answer. Hell yes. We were looking at property in Santa Marta. Perfect area, even has a good bit of Portuguese Brasilian spoken there and Pagode on the radio.

Then the socialist gangs arrived from Venezuela and turned the city into a crime ridden hell hole.

I watched it reported slowly over social media for a decade. Horrible, may the left burn in hell. All of them.

I spend about 6 months a year in Colombia and have been doing so for over 10yrs. Owned property there and travelled extensively throughout the country. You have no idea what your talking about.

Sort of like illegal aliens make up a tenth of the USA’s population now?

Indeed.
My brother & sister-in-law reside in Cali, Colombia - she’s from there.
We have been at odds for decades now - she felt that anybody who made it to the USA should be taken in and cared for.

Now the shoe is on the other foot & she’s really worried how millions of ‘refugees’ flooding into her country will be taken care of, let alone the upcoming troubles with insurgencies supplied by Venezuela.

All I can say is hahahahahaha! How does it feel? Americans cannot solve your problems. We could however the bankers & politicians wouldn’t like it.....

And I lived in Venezuela pre-Chavez.

So?

Columbia has been in a nasty civil war with FARC for five decades.

Maybe in the pretty, safe tourist areas it is nice and calm.

But that was not the part I tended to travel in.

Ask some of your older local friends down there to tell you what a Tee shirt Cut and a Tie Cut is.

It has nothing to do with clothing.

If the South American trend continues, we’re going to need a longer, taller wall.

Hell with that. One precision drone. Kill these dick-tators and their families. Murder the lot of them. Buildings are cheap. Oppression is costly! Think of how much misery and money would be saved with drone strikes on these 3rd world dictators and the Soro’s of the world.

I agree but it is illegal. Easier to find some army insider to do it. Surprised it has not been done by mow.

I can remember when one group was slaughtering pubic workers in Columbia and were concerned they were not getting credit for the atrocities, so they developed the "corte de corbata".

They would cut the victims throat and pull his tongue through the opening like a necktie.
This made sure they got proper credit for their murders.

I remember thinking this would be a tough group to negotiate with. -Tom
