I’m an American citizen, and I own property in America. That means I must pay the government whatever they want or they take it from me. That’s not what a government is for. It’s supposed to protect my property rights, not hold me hostage for it.
Your description is exactly why young productive people have no intention of being saddled with anything; they’ll move where they want, when they want - and no home, children, etc. will stand in their way. While it poses a whole slew of problems, the worst problems are in the expensive places that suffer the resulting brain drain.
NY state offers “free” tuition in order to anchor young people there; recipients must live in NY one year for each year of free tuition they receive. We’ve re-invented indentured servitude in a (failing) attempt to stop white flight.
