Shannon's Law makes it a crime to shoot up into the air.
So, it convicts stupidity.

Trust me, we fire our weapons responsibly all the time.

The fact that Ian McCollum calls Arizona his home base should tell you something.

Shannon’s Law makes it a FELONY (hard prison time) to fire ANYWHERE into or within a municipality. Exceptions are in defense of self, others or live stock. An accidental discharge...even in your own home...and you are screwed. A coyote or bobcat tearing up your yorkie? Shoot and you are screwed.

This bill was sold to the public and politicians as an attempt to reduce celebratory random gunfire in the emotional wake of the tragic death of Shannon Smith. While there is merit in that notion, the bill had the cynical added benefit for anti gunners of adding more people as prohibited possessors. Besides, there were already laws on the books prohibitng the New Years type drunken shooting into the air.

Last I heard they were trying to make use of birdshot in handguns legal for defense of pets but I don’t know if that went anywhere. Where I live in Illinois you can shoot in defense of self or property and pets are considered property.

All in all in my opinion this is a rotten law and in reality a trap for decent people to lose their gun rights.
