The pro-LGBT pressure group GLAAD released its annual report on the state of LGBT representation in television last week, and while it found a rise in prime-time depictions of homosexual and transgender characters, its demanding that Hollywood double its efforts so that a fifth of regular primetime characters are LGBT five years from now.
Of the 879 series regular characters expected to appear on broadcast primetime scripted programming in the coming year, 90 (10.2 percent) were counted as LGBTQ, the group reports, meeting an expectation set by the group last year and marking the highest percentage of LGBTQ regular characters GLAAD has counted on primetime scripted broadcast programming.
That means that prime-time representation is more than double Gallups 2017 estimate that 4.5% of the U.S. population identifies as LGBT. (GLAAD cites a survey it did with Harris that supposedly found that 20% of Americans aged 1834 are LGBT.) But the group wants that over-representation to double yet again, calling on the industry to ensure that 20 percent of series regular characters on primetime scripted broadcast series are LGBTQ by 2025.
Further, we would challenge all platforms to make sure that within the next two years, half of LGBTQ characters on every platform are people of color, the group adds. While broadcast has actually hit this mark two years in a row, cable and streaming have yet to reach this goal.
GLAAD claims that it wants only to ensure that entertainment reflects the world in which it is created and the audience who consumes it, but evidence suggests that effectively quadrupling the actual LGBT population will further contribute to widespread misconceptions. Gallup reported in June that Americans greatly overestimate the LGBT share of the population, wrongly assuming almost a quarter of the population to be homosexual.
While LGBT representation is steadily rising on American television, GLAAD has complained for years about the lack of gay characters and themes in major movies, as well as pushing for more LGBT content in videogames. In August 2018, it joined with the group Times Up to organize a coalition of more than 45 groups, talent agencies, and production companies demanding more frequent and favorable depictions of transgender characters in media.
However, GLAADs own research suggests an unavoidable conflict between activists increasing demands for identity politics and mainstream audiences decreasing willingness to be lectured in their entertainment. According to GLAAD, the aggressiveness of LGBT activists has yielded reductions in the share of Americans aged 1834 who qualify as LGBT allies.
Wait a minute- Gay people ASSURED everyone that all they ever really wanted was just to be married- and they would leave everyone alone- Yeah right- Now they have become a thug organization forcing their way into everything front and center-
when will they begin demanding that ALL old movies and shows be edited to have gay people play the parts?
Today: Prime Time TV Programs
Tomorrow: Drive-By Media Personalities
I love Patricia Heaton, and I was able to get to 3/4 of the first show.
Very sad, but I cannot enjoy a show that tries to manipulate me.
Demands. So.....what if White and Hispanic Catholics demand 1 in 5 actors be a straight Catholic??????
Last week’s show was even worse, discussion ED drugs and being vulgar.
I’m afraid she’s joined the ranks of post-Christian Hollywood.
I doubt if we’ll watch it much anymore.

Compare with the percentage in the population.
Isn’t the 10% based on Kinsey’s suspect research?
Watched ‘Wheel of Fortune’ tonight for some lighthearted fun. The winner turned out to be a homosexual from Michigan. His ‘partner’ ran up on the stage and planted a big kiss square his lips. There is a contact form for the show, so I immediately fired one off to Pat and Vanna to say that’s the last time we’ll be watching the show. Dissing the core audience to try to placate a very troubled 1% of the population was the last straw.
GFYS, Glaad douchebags.

Stopped watching several years ago.
Have much more free time and peace of mind.
I highly recommend it.
If the 10% is correct they are overrepresented by 100% or more. Since only 1-4 percent of the pop is gay, it follows that most of the pop don’t feel a burning need to include gay characters in every show.
Ok. Let’s see a reboot of ‘My Three Sons’, ‘Brady Bunch’, ‘Ozzie & Harriet’, ‘Father Knows Best’ and ‘Leave It To Beaver’s...no Thanks...
“People vote privately in what they watch when no one is watching them.”
Partly correct. Shouldn’t that solve the problem? Why make shows that no one watches?
Only partly correc because a given show is more than it’s gay component. Some can enjoy a show because they ignore the gay stuff.
Do MSM anchors count in their quota totals?
What about Congressional Stars?
