President Donald Trump has been ordered by a New York State judge
to pay $2 million to a group of nonprofit organizations as part of
a settlement
in a civil lawsuit stemming from persistent violations
of state charities laws.

The payment is the final resolution to a case brought by the New
York attorney general's office after the Trump Foundation held a
fundraiser for military veterans during the 2016 campaign.

I am an attorney.

I actually read the whole article.

I am guessing this is a judgment, but its not clear to me.

Especially because a few paragraphs down, it references a settlement.

So I will come back to where my question began. If this is a settlement (which ultimately is signed off by the judge as a court order), then the settlement was agreed upon by both sides beforehand. Settlements usually get both sides something they want. In this case, Trump probably agreed to pay these non-profits to wrap this up and end the court case (and associated costs).

My initial reaction is that Trump would not settle for something he wasnt happy with, so I take the title and article ‘spin’ as just that, spin. Probably good for Trump and probably not all of what the people bringing the lawsuit were hoping to get.

Its funny how FReepers get so easily upset and RAISE THEIR VOICE over the stuff written in articles by journalists so bad at journalism that you cant discern basic facts in the article.

The two million must be paid by President Trump himself for breaching his fiduciary duty to properly oversee the foundation that bears his name.

If there is some meat in that the is room to go after the Clintoons.

According to an article in National Review, all of the money WAS distributed to charities, but the court objected to the fact that the distribution was not done directly by the Trump Foundation, but through the Trump campaign. If this wasn’t Trump, there probably never would have been a lawsuit filed.

That’s how I read it.

It’s a Settlement.

Yep, it was a settlement. The lawyers cost more than the settlement. Gets that one off the Trump team’s plate.

Each quarter of the year Trump donates his salary to a charity, not to the US Treasury.
