South NJ is conservative. Its like upstate NY

Where do you et the idea that upstate NY is conservative? If you look at a population weighted election map of upstate NY you can see that the bulk of the population is in the cities Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Albany, Ithaca, etc and those are solid blue. Meaning that people vote and although the least populated areas voted Republican and make the map area look largely red, this is an illusion due to the fact that the cities go Democrat and don't have the same geographic area. Unfortunately trees, rocks and black flies don't vote.

Good point. There are 10 House districts in the region that I would call "upstate New York." Right now they have 3 Republicans and 6 Democrats in those seats, and one seat is vacant in a heavily Republican district.

Keep in mind that New York is certainly going to lose one House seat after the 2020 census, and maybe even two. You can be sure that 1-2 GOP seats will be gerrymandered out of existence.

I mean rural areas are GOP. In many respects we’re a minority in this country.

Being a small town or rural voter means you have little say in what’s going on.

As Democrats dominate the vote-rich cities and are swamping the suburbs, too.
