I agree with you. Take the latest example of Katie Hill. The argument was made into a male vs female double standard. Huh?! She’s immoral. She should not be in Congress of the United States of America. Period.
I just don’t understand why so many true scumbags rise to the top. Why isn’t it ok to demand more from these people?

Malignant sociopaths and psychopaths get a rush from power over others. Once addicted to this rush, they will do anything to keep it coming.
They activly seek out positions of power, whether it be the CEO of a company, a beat cop, a prison guard, a building code enforcer (like the BTK serial killer did!), or the big brass ring, a state or federal level politician.
At least there is a psych eval required to be a cop or prison guard.
Sadly, about half the people who failed the psych eval still become cops or prison guards.
Worse, there are no psych evals required to be a politician or bureaucrat...

That standard would catch many more Congress-critters. Her immediate problem was that Hill apparently violated the House’s recently enacted ethical prohibitions against sexual relationships with staffers, written during the #MeToo frenzy. The irony is that the first known violation was by a female. There are rumors that much more damaging videos are out there which would have been released in the absence of her resignation.
