Booker introduces bill banning facial recognition tech in public housing

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on Friday introduced a bill banning the use of facial recognition technology in public housing, mirroring legislation proposed in the House in July.

The No Biometric Barriers to Housing Act would block the tech from being installed in housing units that receive funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“Using facial recognition technology in public housing without fully understanding its flaws and privacy implications seriously harms our most vulnerable communities,” Booker, a 2020 presidential candidate, said in a statement.

“Facial recognition technology has been repeatedly shown to be incomplete and inaccurate, regularly targeting and misidentifying women and people of color. We need better safeguards and more research before we test this emerging technology on those who live in public housing and risk their privacy, safety, and peace of mind.”

Facial recognition technology, which scans faces for the purposes of identifying individuals, has received increasing scrutiny over the past few months.

Civil rights groups have expressed concerns that the technology expands unwarranted surveillance and highlighted studies that have found certain products misidentify women and people of color at higher rates.

“...regularly targeting and misidentifying women and people of color.”

Everything bad seems to effect “women and people of color” the most. It’s uncanny. Climate change, hurricanes, Voter ID laws, meteor strikes...I tell you, we white males have it made in the shade.

Booker introduces bill banning facial recognition tech in public housing so that his pals can keep selling drugs and pimping out young girls, boys, and women.

Hey Cory, they all look alike anyway. Facial recognition doesn’t work. So what’s the problem?

How about using it in, oh, I don’t know, maybe someplace where there’s a lot of rich white folk like Trump Tower?

Sure, who wants to catch criminals, anyway?

His voting base is as stupid as they come.

I’m sure the people who live in public housing will be cheering - or maybe not. After all, they’re the main victims of these predators.

So why won’t Booker have them identified and taken out of circulation? The residents could live better lives and they know it, even though they’ll still vote Dem. I doubt that Booker has ever gone through their experiences. And race is not the thing that matters.

... and that's what I did, LOL. I just couldn't resist.

If I had to guess without reading further, Cory's primary objection would be that since these recognition systems are inaccurate, they are discriminatory in causing false suspicion or arrests. And since they are discriminatory, they must go, even at the cost of safety of the residents. And, a secondary issue might be privacy.

Oh! No! Only women and people of color? Why is any of that OUR RESPONSIBILITY? No one makes sure we in our own neighborhoods have privacy, safety and peace of mind. I guess it’s that UNEQUAL thing again, right?

Whatever makes sense, he’s “agin” it.....

Public housing is the first place it should be. There is NO RIGHT to public housing and in order to stay in public housing they must meet certain conditions. Don’t want to them to be in the actual rooms though but in the areas publicly accessible is fine.

Also may actually HELP the people who are there legit and trying to maintain a lawful and moral life!

Bet Booker thinks it’s just fine for the rest of us. We all know why he doesn’t want it in public housing.

Ironically, that would be where it would be least likely to actually work.
