Today is the 50th anniversary of the internet and there are a number of articles bemoaning 'a force of good' has been transformed into a medium of hatred and a threat to democracy.

There are those who want to control the internet. They know how dangerous 'hate speech' is. They know know what's best for us. They know we can't be trusted to tell the difference from mainstream meida approved news from fake news and conspiracy theories.

They're right. There is a threat to the internet. It comes from the people who want to control it.

Beware the forces of "good".

Tim Berners-Lee warns internet’s power for good is ‘under threat’

Opinion: 50 years ago, I helped invent the internet. How did it go so wrong?

Read an article back in the mid- to late-80s in “Mondo 2000” that said the internet had the capacity to create “Athens without slaves” but the fear was that it would do the opposite and create slaves without Athens. Always seemed so obvious we were heading that way. But how do you stop it?

For the most part, it was social media with it’s attendant Orwellian authoritarianism and demand for centralized control that ruined the internet. The internet used to be much more independent and less controlled.

“...a plan created by experts and individuals from across the world to make sure our online world is safe, empowering and genuinely for everyone.”

That’s a threat, right there.

I am so sick of that word, Democracy.

We are a Republic.

Even our side uses that word.

Is it a force for good?

Silicon Valley and the Deep State are increasingly using it to addict us and brainwash us. Look at the media now, it is basically all Fake. And they don’t even bother to pretend any more, they just project their Fake reality on us more and more.

“Next month, we’ll publish the Contract for the Web”

Why not put out a draft for public comment?

Evil prefers the darkness.

That's all well and good until they ban sites like FreeRepublic.com as right wing extremist hate sites.

1969 was quite a year

I was born on July 9 the day they took off for the moon on the Apollo 11 mission

They landed and planning to flag on July 20

Apparently the Internet was invented

ask Al gore about that

Led Zeppelin was touring and tearing up the United States of America

Music was it an absolute zenith before the disco era of the 1970s which of course wasn’t all bad

Of course you can forget Woodstock?

I do wonder if "the internet" has been a net plus or a net minus to civilization. One can keep in touch with others, find info that they might otherwise not have found...and other pluses as well.

OTOH,the internet has made the lives of terrorists and perverts easier....

There are too many pluses...and minuses...for me to list.

"bringing together governments, companies and citizen groups to come up with a clear plan of action to protect the web as a force for good. In a month’s time that plan will be ready. This birthday must mark the moment we take on the fight for the web we want.”

Who is this "we" they speak of?

And define "good".

"Good" in China means you do what your government tells you to do.

I fear that his "contract" is not going to be "good" at all.

Our U.S. Constitution could be helpful to them , but they probably don't want the peasants getting ideas about freedom or anything like that.

Code speak for censorship. You either take the good with the bad or burn it all down.

Censors abound.

Vote them out, and if eventually necessary, cut their throats.
