Protesters Gather in Santiago, Chile -
LATIN AMERICA1
8:58 22.10.2019
The Chilean capital has been rocked by protests for more than two weeks already since the government announced increase in public transport fares.
People are taking to the streets in protest in Santiago, as the political turmoil continues in the country.
Mass protests against the increase in the subway ticket prices are in full swing, despite Chilean President Sebastian Pinera having announced on 19 October that the public transport fee hikes would be suspended.
The demonstrations started on 6 October and quickly grew into mass riots, in which at least 15 people have died so far. The Chilean government has declared a state of emergency in the country and imposed a curfew in several provinces and municipalities of Santiago.
"Miss me yet?"
They raised the price from $1.12 to $1.16.
They rolled it back when people bothered to fight back. As usual, it’s a tightrope act: Screw the people just shy of that line where all hell breaks loose. For Chile, they crossed that line. Oops.
They’re gonna have to raise the rate to $2 to fix all the damage.
Are there other issues involved? It’s hard to believe that riots break out over a small increase in Subway fares. So was this the last straw, so to speak, involving other grievances against that government?
I saw a good post on exactly that either here or at r/The_Donald in the last couple days. So Yes, but I dont have details.
Is it me or do Latin Americans seem like an over entitled, pugnacious and selfish bunch of people?
This post was interesting, seemed to have authentic local commentary;
Boy, Reddit sure didn’t want anyone reading that. Quarantined!
All of r/The_Donald is under quarantine for really specious reasons. Same as Zuckerberg and FB, and Jack Dorsey and Twitter, censoring conservatives/Republicans/Trump supporters.
Right but here it is:
Mom says the increase in metro costs deserved a loud protest but it was taken over by Chilean communists who blame the rich for everything and started rioting and attacking wealthy neighborhoods.
Chile is a very different country physically. The country is very big, but vast, vast majority of the population is in the super city that is Santiago(Chile basically is Santiago). So because of the dense population in one place its very easy for mobs of leftist to organize.
Tldr: everyone hated the price increase and wanted to protest. Now Everyone is terrified of the anarchy that has been occurring (not a peaceful protest) and the resulting military enforced curfew (basically Marshall law)
