Trump backs out of plan to host G-7 Summit at his Miami golf resort, blames media

President Trump said Saturday that he will no longer host the G-7 Summit at his struggling Miami golf resort — but blamed the media and Democrats for his about-face rather than concern over an appearance of self-dealing.

Trump made the announcement in a trio of evening tweets, lashing out at his Democratic rivals and at press opposition — including from the New York Post — to his holding the summit at Trump National Doral.

“I thought I was doing something very good for our Country by using Trump National Doral, in Miami, for hosting the G-7 Leaders. It is big, grand, on hundreds of acres, next to MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, has tremendous ballrooms & meeting rooms, and each delegation would have its own 50 to 70 unit building,” Trump wrote.

“I announced that I would be willing to do it at NO PROFIT or, if legally permissible, at ZERO COST to the USA. But, as usual, the Hostile Media & their Democrat Partners went CRAZY!” he added.

In another tweet, he said he will no longer consider Doral for the meeting — and added they are searching for another site and considering Camp David.

They held it at Camp David before, and apparently it was horrible for all involved. Perfect! 😂😂😂

The press hated the bus rides out to Camp David last time. Trump should specify school buses without heating or air conditioning this time.

Just do it in your second term Mr. President!

The U.S. doesn't host the G-7 during Trump's second term.

“Trump LOVES to troll the MSM”

You just know he threw it out there as a distraction for the MSM to chew on. While they were bouncing off the walls and attacking Mulvaney, PDJT was working. I think he had some judicial appointments confirmed then. Poor Mick had to go in and take the flak.

The press had previously asked the White House for the G7 summit not to be held at Camp David because of the limited facilities and the need for a bumpy one-hour press bus ride in and out each day.

So now, thanks to the MSM’s petulant whining, Trump is threatening to use Camp David after all.

The result? Trump gets tons of publicity for Doral - publicity for which he does not need to pay a single penny now - and the press get to be miserable schlepping themselves and all their gear an hour in-and-out of the Maryland woods for several days.

Depending on where located. G7 meets have had a history of having security problems with protesters which resulted in riots and serious property damage. When Trump first announced this location the media played politics, saw it as an opportunity to ramp up Trump ownership and work up so called emolument advantage. But would not report and spiked the at cost offer for a location which has excellent facilities and a secured location.

Yes Net operating income has fallen almost 70% over the last several years, it is under-performing the Miami market overall in terms of occupancy rates etc. despite Doral dropping its room pricing structure. Multiple major sponsors and tournaments (for example the PGA moved its annual Doral stop to Mexico City) have pulled out starting in 2015.

Jessica Vachiratevanurak of the Trump Organisation blamed it paertially on blowback from politics when she went and asked Miami-Dade to lower Doral’s tax rates via a lower valuation (They got it).

The idea was wrong. And the actual cost of hosting the meeting is nothing compared to the free global PR. Yes, it was a mistake and yes, it is good that he has backed down on it.

Yes. But there is also the matter, as it has been pointed out above, that Doral is underperforming even in terms of its competitors in the Miami area, plus June is a very slow month in terms of occupancy for all southern Florida resorts. So even if Doral offers rooms and food at “cost”, it is still doing better during the period of the G7 by covering operating costs with what would likely be full or close to full occupancy as opposed to having empty rooms and not meeting overhead costs.

Not making a profit and just breaking even vs losing money is still a net gain. But I’m sure Trump knows this. And it was a bad idea from the get go.

While it could be said that offering the resort at a lower cost to tax payers than competing venues who might want to make a profit is a good thing, right or wrong it smacks of self-dealing. The optics is bad as is the timing when Trump and his supports are going after Biden and his son for profiting from Joe’s position as VP.

I agree. I did feel that he should have never gone there with offer of Doral. I want him to concentrate on fighting the impeachment, getting criminal charges, being able to get the truth out with evidence of the coup once and for all. Offering Doral would have just ended up in court, media non stop, lawsuits, etc.

How about having it at a Holiday Inn Express out along the Belt way? Is Motel 6 still in business?

Kind of hope he now plans to make it SOOOOO utterly inconvenient for, oh, maybe, Jerry Nadler’s district.

Or, perhaps, Nasty Pelosi’s district.

Pencil necks, maybe.

let’s sock it to their constituents and make it absolutely inconvenient for them....this is the kind of “representative” they want, let them pay the price.

Seriously.

They should hand out T Shirts to the Press saying “I COULD HAVE BEEN AT DORAL but all I got is the lousy T-Shirt”.
