"The reality is Congress is going to act," U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said Wednesday. "We're coming for you, [NCAA]." Romney participated in a roundtable discussion with several other politicians, advocates and others involved in the sports world such as NFL Players Association attorney Joe Briggs and ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas. Romney told ESPN he was committed to finding a better way to compensate college athletes.

Keeping in mind that for him, the penultimate cause of real importance is - and always will be - Mitt Romney.
Its time for big time universities to decide whether they are educational institutions or managers of a minor league farm system for the “pros”. Its clear now they can no loner be both! (Probably it should have never been allowed to happen!) I hear graduation rates for college athletics have risen over the last several years. Now is that due to the NCAA forcing payers & coaches to knuckle down and pay attention to academics or is it due to lowering the academic standard? I bet its the later!
Strike a nerve I see with goobers and gumps. PSU, USC and Notre Dame have an actual university connected to the football complex. Look at Alabamas academic ranking , Ill save you the trouble..its 110...that is 109 public universities are better than it. Notre Dame, USC and PSU are all in top 1/3. This is a stupid argument, Bama , Clemson and Georgia are about jock sniffer alumni in states when its not bass fishing season or get drunk down at the beach house season, its about living vicariously thorough black athletes. The kids should get paid
True. Penn State has an actual academic campus including the showers where a former coach was raping young boys. Then the child rapes were covered up by the august “jocks sniffers” in the Penn State administration so as not to tarnish the reputation of their athletic program and Paterno.
and is it for all sports? The tennis team? soccer team? Water Polo team? Think about it...all the athletes in a college to get paid? how much will they be compensated?
I see a docket of lawsuits.
And, as history shows us, as soon as the government is involved, it's gonna get be f'ed up beyond repair.
That's my $.02...oh wait, I'm on the typing team..When do I get my $20.00?
The Booster Clubs will pay the top recruits to come, and more if they do well.
Will they be taxed just like any other wage earner for the salaries, the tuition, and all other benefits regular students don’t receive?
Congressional priorities, where is this in the Constitution?
The rest of the sports, both men and women, lose money for the university.
There will be some exceptions to this, but not many.
Now, on the football team there will only be about 5 or so standout players whose likeness will actually sell. I mean, aside from family and friends, not many people will buy the jersey of the 3rd string QB or even that of a 1st string OL or DL.
I can see where this is going to cause problems on the team. The big uglies protect the QB and open lanes for the RBs and it is usually these guys who receive all the fame and glory. You usually don't see the big uglies being interviewed after a game.
What the players haven't thought about though are the coming tax implications of this move. And that's really what this is all about. Just another means to get tax money. Why else is California the first to move on this?
Gotta employ those “inner-city youths” somehow. There is a glut of rappers on the market and the car wash isn’t hiring.
When I was in college the university president was desperate to start a football team. Fortunately saner heads prevailed.
One more reason for kids out of high school to just go to a Junior College.
As I understand it, schools CAN'T pay the athletes. It has to be someone else. (Not an expert on the legislation)
Yeah, and how about those pedophiles at Penn State “up north?”
WTH is a free 6 figure education if not fricking compensation?!
It’s because they don’t make the players declare a real major anymore. A lot of these players get degrees in General Studies. Take enough classes taught by Dr. “Friend of the Program” and we’ll give a worthless diploma, and we’ll inflate our graduation numbers. I remember when announcing the lineups they would announce the players majors. Ever wonder why they don’t do that anymore?
Legalized sports betting will finish off college ball...
Thanks for the laugh.
You sanctimonious pricks are always hilarious.
In fact, I think you’re little joey scarborough.
They have time for this, but Trump support being driven from the internet? Meh, nothing to see here.
I don’t disagree with your post except that BOOSTERS will buy lots of OL or DL jerseys in order to secure their “services.”
I agree completely!
This will never happen but a possible solution is the “pro” subsidize big time college football & basketball. The universities sell the use of their name to individual teams. Part of the deal is the player gets a scholarship for an opportunity to get an education after his\her playing days are through whenever that may be. The universities get revenue from the sue of their name for the team, & all paraphernalia, The “athletes” are housed somewhere off campus, removing the hypocrisy of the scholar athlete. In some cases might even reduce campus crime problems.
