Toronto Raptors Fans Print Thousands of Pro–Hong Kong T-Shirts for Home Opener
National Review ^ | October 17, 2019 | Tobias Hoonhout

In the wake of the NBA-China scandal, Toronto Raptors fans are gearing up for a political statement for the team’s home opener.

A crowd-funded campaign has raised over $34,000 in five days to print thousands of t-shirts that read “The North Stand with Hong Kong” for Toronto’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 22.

“We are able to make 7,000 T shirts, which is 2,000 more than our original target! We will cover 35% instead of 25% of the audience! That’s 1/3 of the arena!” the group’s GoFundMe page reads. The campaign was organized in part by Mimi Lee, a founder of the Torontonian HongKongers Action Group, which began hosting events in June “to raise awareness and support the current pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong started by the extradition to China bill fiasco.” 14

In the buildup to Canada’s federal election on October 21, the group states:

We may have a new government by the time this NBA match happens. Showing the Canadian government how much we stand with Hong Kong will definitely set a tone on the China policy for the new administration.

. . . Canada is actually another battleground to fight against China. In Canada, Pro-Beijing nationalists gathered to disrupt Pro-Democracy events across the country. In addition to deep-rooted historical ties, there are 300,000 Canadians currently working and living in Hong Kong. Canada and Hong Kong share universal values such as the rule of law, individual freedoms and human rights.

The Raptors, who won the NBA championship in June, have yet to officially comment on the shirts. The NBA has faced heavy criticism for its handling of the Daryl Morey situation, most recently as a result of LeBron James calling Morey “misinformed” for his pro–Hong Kong tweet.

Our BB fan base is mostly black, at least in my city. About 80% of the fans in the stands are AA’s.

A LOT of Hong Kongers emigrated to Canada before the Brit handover of the island to the Chicoms. I remember reading about that at the time.

Good for these people for doing this!

Some basketball fans have been booted from NBA arenas in the States for wearing pro-Hong Kong shirts or waving pro-Hong Kong signs. Do you think the league has the guts to eject 7,000 ticket-buying customers?

They will all be asked to leave. The NBA’s commie overlords will not like that.

The majority of the large Chinese community in the Toronto area have their origins in the HK-Guangdong region of China. There has been an influx of Mandarin speaking Chinese in the last 20 years. I have many Mandarin speaking friends and most are happy to be out of China and have no affection for the Chi-com government. There is a significant minority, unfortunately, who have their real allegiance to China, not to mention those who are paid operatives of the Chinese government. The tension between the two groups has the potential to split the Chinese-Canadian community into warring factions.

So where a shirt over the tee shirt.

If the league/venue demands fans lift up their shirts for a tee check, there’s gonna be even more heck to pay...

I’m guessing these t-shirt people are native to Hong Kong not Canada. The Canadian sports boards are suggesting that’s who it is.

So at this point, Toronto Raptors fans have made more of a public statement in support of the Hong Kong protestors than have the President or the State Department.
