If you want to go and define the PKK, they are a socialist organization, with a military-like ‘arm’, and very close to being called a cult.
They conduct kidnappings, sabotage, assaults, assassinations, etc. They are heavily involved in blackmail, money-laundering, and drug-dealing. From the trafficking business of drugs into Europe....the PKK clears one billion-plus dollars a year. They may not make the drugs or do the dealing on the streets of Italy, but they helped to get the drugs to the distribution points.
They are not your friend. Nor are the PKK a friend of Syrians, or for that matter a friend of Turkey. The longer that the US sat there in northern Syria...the more entrenched that the PKK became and in hopes of a mafia-state in the end.

1. There was no “whitewash”.
2. The “rebranding” fooled no one, in or out of Syria. EVERYONE knew the YPG were taking the lead in the SDF.
3. Why the SDF? Because the YPG were not going to be fighting alone, and they did not fight alone. They were the best armed and the most experienced but they were not alone.
4. The groups gathered together under the SDF banner were Kurds, and yes mostly YPG, and Syrian Arabs, Syrian Turkomen and Syrian Christians who all lived in the region of Syria ISIS was attempting to take over.
NO WHERE and at no time was anyone misled that the YPG was not taking the lead in the SDF.
“Democratic”. Yes. The areas that wound up being protected by the SDF conduct their local affairs democratically.
Notice how the slanderer did not continue the whole interview with the Colonel. All they wanted was a part that looked “bad”.

I know the Kurds did not storm Raqqa on the backs of unicorns screaming “America Akbar” and in fact conscripted middle school aged kids into their various militias. They were our mercenaries and were as a special bonus fighting for their own land.
