Family of teen killed by US diplomat's wife attend White House meeting

The family of a British teenager who was killed by the wife of a U.S. diplomat driving the wrong way will meet with members of the Trump administration on Tuesday, a White House official said.

White House officials to meet with parents of teen killed by U.S. diplomat's wife

Tim Dunn and Charlotte Charles will meet with senior administration officials at the White House, the official said. It's unclear if they will meet with President Trump.

Harry Dunn, 19, was killed in August in an accident near RAF Croughton, a British military base used by the U.S. Air Force. Dunn was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by Anne Sacoolas, the wife of a U.S. diplomat, who was driving on the wrong side of the road.

Sacoolas claimed diplomatic immunity after the incident and returned to the United States.

Dunn’s parents say Sacoolas should not have been allowed to return home and are seeking answers.

The incident has led to some diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and the United Kingdom. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson last week urged the U.S. to reconsider giving diplomatic immunity to Sacoolas in the case.

Dunn's parents came to the U.S. this week and have urged Trump to intervene so that Sacoolas can be held accountable.

Trump was asked last week about ongoing negotiations with Johnson over Dunn's death, which the president referred to as a "terrible accident."

Does anyone know why England allowed Anne Sacoolas to leave?

Did she claim diplomatic immunity when she left or did she sneak out and then claim diplomatic immunity?

If the case was being investigated and she left without permission and claimed diplomatic immunity after she left I believe there's a case to send her back.

A sad, sad case. There are no winners here, everyone is a victim

Regardless, she had liability insurance, which I assume British law requires on all automobiles as well. Have the liability insurance throw in the policy to the boy’s family.

What does being “held accountable” look like to these parents? What is the final outcome that would satisfy them? Maybe that final outcome can be reached without her returning. A diplomat (or family) travels on a special passport and should not be prevented from departing a country.

I worked in personal injury litigation for a couple of decades. It’s at least in part about money, and money will soften the pain of a dead child, as well.

Americans might forget which side of the street to drive on in Britain. She didn’t do it on purpose.

Does the entire family travel on a special passport, or only the diplomat?

For me being held accountable would be to stand trial in England where the accident occurred.

I wonder if she was driving a LHD or a RHD vehicle?

Standing trial is not a final outcome. It is an intermediary step to a judicial outcome. She will never stand trial there.

How is the diplomat’s wife a victim? She drove like a dumbass, killed a man, said sorry I bed down with a diplomat so you can’t hold me accountable, and fled the country asap.

She’s no victim.

I think but by no means positive, is that she claimed diplomatic immunity and said she would not leave, then left.

If you go bending diplomat immunity rules, when does it stop?

I don’t think she did it intentionally. Does anyone?

Diplomatic immunity rules apply.

Our President has said it was a terrible accident. I’ll take Trump’s assessment of this situation as mine

Diplomatic immunity rules apply.

And they can be waived in cases like this. She shouldn't be able to kill someone and then hide behind diplomatic immunity.

Our President has said it was a terrible accident.

Isn't that for a court of law to decide?

Reminds me of the kid who was run over in Africa a few years back by a US diplomatic convoy:

Diplomatic immunity rules apply.

Yes. And the US can waive those rules. Not saying they should, just saying they can.
