Vaping illness, deaths likely very rare beyond U.S., experts say

E-cigarette or vaping-linked lung injuries that have killed 29 and sickened more than 1,000 people in the United States are likely to be rare in Britain and other countries where the suspect products are not widely used, specialists said on Monday.

Experts in toxicology and addiction said they are sure that the 1,299 confirmed and probable American cases of serious lung injuries linked to vaping are “a U.S.-specific phenomenon,” and there is no evidence of a similar pattern of illness in Britain or elsewhere.

“What’s happening in the U.S. is not happening here (in Britain), nor is it happening in any other countries where vaping is common,” said John Britton, a professor and respiratory medicine consultant and director of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies at Nottingham University.

“It’s a localised problem,” he told a London briefing.

She and Britton also noted that rates of tobacco cigarette smoking - which can cause lung cancer and heart disease and is known to kill about half of all those who do it - are dropping more rapidly in Britain than in the United States.

This is partly due to tobacco smokers switching to nicotine-containing e-cigarettes to help them quit, they said.

Note that Europe limits vaping nicotine to 22 mg/ml. Popular American brands have several times that amount per ml.

They're pretty rare in the U.S., so far as I can see.

Yes the illness factor is a concern but relatively small. The hidden and unmentioned factor is the large nicotine addiction due to the increase in vaping.

It should be understood that the majority of people who are becoming seriously ill are adding illegal drugs and other ingredients to their vaping concoctions. Vaping is little different than a pump nebulizer as a drug delivery system. Can’t be too surprised if when you deeply inhale toxic and corrosive substances, you ruin your lungs and often die a miserable death.

Not all personal or youthful indiscretions are benign.

Well.... Not exactly.

Nicotine Salt based eliquids are available in the 60 milligram range, but freebase nicotine based eliquids are very rarely seen above 18.

Statistically if you look at vaping vs cigs cigs are at about 42% use vs. Vaping at 46%. 7 years ago cigs were at 86%. Vaping is winning the cigarette war. Ban it now and most addicted nic heads will go back to tobacco including all new nic heads.

The Population who use cigarettes or vaping has gone down. In the last 30 years.

Unmentioned, undocumented, and very likely untrue.

https://newsinhealth.nih.gov/2019/02/vaping-rises-among-teens

About 37% of 12th graders reported vaping in 2018, compared with 28% in 2017. Vaping of each substance that was asked about increased. This includes nicotine, flavored liquids, marijuana, and hash oil.

“Vaping is reversing hard-fought declines in the number of adolescents who use nicotine,” says Dr. Richard Miech, who led the study at the University of Michigan. “These results suggest that vaping is leading youth into nicotine use and nicotine addiction, not away from it.”

But the large majority of U.S. cases involve no nicotine at all.

And it isn’t the THC/CBD or flavouring in itself or the cases should be more evenly distributed geographically.

But wait...Fox News is calling it a "National Vaping Crisis."

I wonder which of their ownership interests coined that phrase.

I suspect modifications to the e-cig itself and completely unregulated 3rd party cartridges play a part as well.

There they go again throwing another baby out with the bath water. Abusers of substances like these don’t necessarily ruin it for everybody else, it’s the assholes who think they’re mission in life is to save us from ourselves when they are oblivious to their own risky behavior(s).

Cigarettes are still more addictive, deadlier, and still ok.

Right. Nicotine isn’t the issue in illnesses. But high nicotine products are being targeted because of their youth appeal. The feds are not being honest.

“About 37% of 12th graders reported vaping in 2018, compared with 28% in 2017.”

Yet:

“About 2 of every 25 high school students (8.1%) reported in 2018 that they smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days—a decrease from 15.8% in 2011”

Those statistics aren’t separate. Yes, more teens might be getting addicted to nicotine with vaping than cigarettes, but nicotine isn’t what kills you. Smoking is what kills you.
