Concerned that rising waves will flood runways and buildings in the coming years, officials at San Francisco International Airport are moving ahead with a $587 million plan to build a major new sea wall around the entire airport.
The plan, the latest example of the growing cost of climate change in California, involves driving steel pilings - sheets with interlocking edges - into the mud and also constructing concrete walls in some places around all of the airports 10-mile perimeter.
This is something weve been looking at for many years, said Doug Yakel, a spokesman for the airport. Whats changed is the level of protection that is needed.
The airport, built in 1927 in a cow pasture at the edge of San Francisco Bay, serves 55 million passengers a year, making it the nations seventh busiest. But its runways sit only about 10 feet above sea level.

Waste of money as the runway is 10 feet above sea level and no risk of flooding.

Stop confusing people with facts!
Great FReeper chat here, folks. We are laughing so hard.
Exactly. What a f’n scam.

Why not build an airport the Central Valley and commute the passengers into SF? it would give the Super High Speed Train something to do.
***But its runways sit only about 10 feet above sea level.***
And just how far above sea level are Al Gore’s house, and Obama’s mansion? not very much,
The Spruce Goose doesn’t need a runway.
Hunter Biden wins the bid!!!
Joe says he has nothing to do with it, and we should impeach Trump because of the suggestion.

Won't there have to be openings somewhere in the wall to also let water out?...It does rain there on occasion.
Will it hold the poop in?
But, are the waters actually rising?
Hey dude, like haven’t you studied like how “unicorn flatulence” is a thing when like surfs up - dude! /s
Oh, yes, those ice-caps all around the world. The ones in the mid- Pacific, the ones in Africa, the ones near India.
But the important question is, will they write the names of the dead in Spanish or Chinese?
This is all BS. Real BS. If city officials were so concerned about rising sea levels, why did they spend many millions on low income housing on Treasure Island (given to the city by the Navy)? Treasure Island is a man-made island that sits mere feet above sea level. No wall is being built around Treasure Island, where many low-income residents are housed by the city. No wall is being built around the waterfront, where piers sit mere feet above sea level. The Marina district, Fisherman's Wharf, the Embarcadero with its many restaurants and stores, all sit a mere feet above sea level. One could argue that they are closer to the water than SFO's runways.
All a hoax by the city.
Officials are probably drooling over the “wall surcharge” they can add to tickets of those arriving at, and departing from, SFO.
Wake me when I’m woke...
The land is subsiding, like New Orleans.
Supposedly, it’s risen about 1 inch every 8 years over the past few decades. At that rate, you’re looking at 1 foot in 96 years.
I’ll bet that wall is going to cost twice what was quoted.
