BEIRUT/QAMISHLI, Syria, (Reuters) - The Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have been holding negotiations at a Russian airbase in Syria, a Syrian Kurdish politician told Reuters on Sunday, expressing hope for a deal that would halt a Turkish attack.
Ahmed Suleiman, a senior member of the Kurdish Democratic Progressive Party in Syria, said the talks were being held at Russia's Hmeimim airbase in Latakia.
He did not say if he or his party - which is independent from the SDF - had a role in the negotiations.
Asked about Suleiman's comments, the head of the SDF media office Mustafa Bali said "no comment". "We have confirmed from the start of the (Turkish) invasion that we will study all options that could spare our people ethnic cleansing," he said.
Syrian government officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
Suleiman said he hoped for an agreement between the sides that would "halt the ongoing war and especially its catastrophic and dangerous consequences".
He said the talks could be moved to Damascus, from where he was speaking to Reuters via Whatsapp messenger.
"We are now in Damascus, this is what I can say at present. We hope an agreement is reached that halts the war and its dangerous and catastrophic consequences on the citizens east of the Euphrates".

At last. The Russian intervention has decisively turned the war in favor of the regime. It is well past time to make some political deals to end the bloodshed.
Latest reports are the deal has been done... mostly.
Turk armored column headed to Manbij. Will Russia air power be used to stop them? Russian no-fly-zone? Will the S-400 be put to the test?
It occurs to me that ERD has acjieved a lot by making Kurds ally with Assad. And could just stop now.
If we havent already done so, we should tell the Russians that we will NOT interfere if they bomb the piss out of the invading Turkish forces and their accompanying Islamist Arab militias,
I think the real reason the establishment in DC is angry with Trump - they still harbor the Obama/Hillary/McCain goal to overthrow Assad, and our pullout somehow messes up that plan.
I’ll bet that’s it ! Makes it harder to meddle. Love our Pres !!!!

Finally. I have been saying since the beginning that the Kurds need to start working with Assad to establish their new role in Syria. With our help, they gained military and political control of almost all of Syria east of the Euphrates. There was no way they were going to keep it, without long term support from US. They should have been negotiating with Assad from the day Raqqa fell.
I wonder what latitude we have if Turkey is attacked?
I realize it would be an attack on aggressor forces though. We should be clear not to have to come to Turkey’s aid, especially if the incursion were to take place on Syrian soil.
Russia has been an ally of Syria back into at least the 60s, so this isn’t a shift of power.
Syria would be defending people on it’s own land.
Seems reasoned to me. I wonder what hand Trump had in this. I can’t believe he would just abandon the Kurds. I’ll bet he had something cooking before he pulled our people out.
This would be an adherence to a policy that would see local players handle things, rather than the U. S. having to be the acting agent.
It’s what people wanted. I like this if it plays out in a reasoned manner.
“I think the real reason the establishment in DC is angry with Trump - they still harbor the Obama/Hillary/McCain goal to overthrow Assad, and our pullout somehow messes up that plan.”
A LOT of people got paid a LOT of money by Qatar and the US Government to make the Syrian pipeline happen. And a lot of people died over it. I think this Turkish Invasion is another Gambit to make that happen.
For example, what about the Libyan weapons smuggled from Benghazi to Syria with Turkey's consent? They probably fell into an ISIS ally's hands.
“I realize it would be an attack on aggressor forces though. We should be clear not to have to come to Turkeys aid, especially if the incursion were to take place on Syrian soil.”

That is pretty much his take..and for what its worth I agree.
(BTW Agenda Free TV A Great youtube site. If he has an agenda, he does a good job of hiding it.)
I cannot think of a good rational reason to pull back. There may be one (and I’m not that bright), but I can’t see it.
I Hope/Pray he made thee right choice...but I’ve got a bad feeling, nothing good is going to come of this.
Valin, Trump promised to par back our involvement in foreign conflicts.
Here it seems we had only a few (if you consider 1000 troops in the extended area to be a few) people in the area already. Pulling them out would fall under his promise.
If he had a deal made to protect the Kurds, it would seem a win/win.
I bookmarked the Agenda Free site. I’ll check it out.
Thanks.
