There are those on the left who have a vision of the US that is nationalistic and prioritizes spending which is to uplift people. It got hijacked by those who prefer that instead of helping people, the "help" that's given enslaves them. I doubt that the vision of a generous, uplifting society can exist in a large, diverse country.
I've reached a point of thinking that the only way the US dream can be saved is if the country breaks up.
