Prius is a hybrid, so it has a gasoline engine in addition to the batteries for its electric motor and can move off without having to have the battery charged.

There’s a documentary that mentions the Fairbanks, AK electricity storage. I think it has enough battery-storage capacity to last four days.

Hurricane Katrina— we were driving 100+ miles to get gas. People who didn’t have the foresight to bring extra gas cans & stock up were getting testy with those who did.
I’ve since acquired chargers & inverters that can be powered up from a car’s engine, but once you’re outta gas, the engine’s off.
Simple solution; put a gas powered generator in the trunk of the electric car.
The BMW i3 does just that with it’s Range Extender option.
And they are always going 10 miles under the speed limit!
I live in Texas where the average commute is from 50 to 70 miles one way. Don’t see many e-cars here except for the blue-state refugees living in town.
so all the people living in ‘smart homes’ are paying for service but their home is now ‘dumb’ because of the outrages?
My wife selected a Prius V for a retirement car, I love it!
Visit the grandkids three or four timed a day, 50 PLUS MPG!
I like it!!!
And the TCO is about as good as you can get!

Sweet! Then I can buy a Tesla for $2,000 and shove a fat V8 and 6-speed manual in it? Cool. $15K for a smoke-blowing, earth-killing, high-carbon-output hotrod Tesla. I’m in.
How much does that cost? 3 5 Gallon jugs go for about $45?
