Former Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) has officially joined President Trump's outside legal defense team as the president gears up for an impeachment battle with the House.
Trump's personal attorney, Jay Sekulow, confirmed in a statement Wednesday night that Gowdy would serve as counsel to the president.
"I have known Trey for years and worked with him when he served in Congress. His legal skills and his advocacy will serve the President well," Sekulow said. "Treys command of the law is well known and his service on Capitol Hill will be a great asset as a member of our team.
Sekulow had said Tuesday that Gowdy was in talks to join the president's legal team.
Gowdy is a career prosecutor who served four terms in Congress. He retired in January at the conclusion of his final term and joined Fox News as a contributor. Fox News cut ties with Gowdy on Wednesday ahead of Sekulow's announcement.

He is sharp, but I’m not sure he can be trusted.
So now we know nothing will get done.
Are they preparing to go to court? His strength is as a prosecutor/litigator. Not that he doesn’t research his targeted subject.
Better keep him under surveillance. Swamp creature ping.
“He is sharp, but Im not sure he can be trusted.”
Same here. I think he will be good addition to Trump’s legal team, but we’ll see.
Same.
Smart guy, hope hes more effective than he was as committee chairman.
How is Trump ending up with so many whose m.o. is all talk and no action?
Imagine a smart law student who makes his way.
A young man who transforms himself into a successful federal prosecutor.
He never loses a case.
Stop. Just fkn stop for a moment and realize what that means.
You can be a Jr. of any POS politician and be handed fame, but to earn it in the court room?...
Trey went to Washington.
Trey was confronted with political powers reaching far beyond his character.
He confronted powerful political adversaries.
He did not have the authority to indict one of them, but he exposed them.
Now, he has the chance to return to his roots and raise hell for America.
Give this guy a chance.
Pray for Trey!
Pray for Trey to Prey on They!
We need fighters!
“He is sharp, but Im not sure he can be trusted”.
I agree. He’s no Devin Nines or Jim Jordan who could be trusted all the way.
I say it’s a bad move.
He’ll just do what he’s always done. Recommend they do nothing.
What have you done?
Did you become a 100% successful federal prosecutor?
Have you exposed the lies and hypocrisy of the most notorious political villains on earth?
Our major malfunction was misunderstanding Trey could do anything accept question.
Now the man has a chance to put his capability to work protecting our president.
I wish him well.
I’m humble enough to admit I couldn’t do anything close to what Trey has achieved for the good of mankind in my life.
He can’t indict anyone. What he did was expose them to the best of his ability.
Might be better on advising than getting results, but I don’t trust him. Doubt that he’s MAGA. Probably wants to get a lot of inside scoop so he can write a book, and have his hair and make-up done for lots of t.v.appearances.
Boehner & McConnell were fully informed and approved of arms trafficking to Syrian ‘rebels’ via Libya. When the Benghazi disaster occurred their knowledge was converted into fodder for blackmail.
Gowdy’s snarling dog act was just that - an act. Uncovering the truth would have exposed his bosses and that could not be permitted to occur for obvious reasons. Hillary and Obama knew this hence their shameless lies and Hillary’s infamous arrogant remarks.
Without a finite length of leash will Gowdy finally fulfill his promise as a GOP legal eagle?
Part of Gowdys problem was spelled P-A-U-L R-Y-A-N One of the reasons he retired is because he did not see the Republicans being effective even after Ryan was gone and he rather make money as a lawyer and consultant.
He does write a “scathing” letter once in a while doesn’t he?
