About a third of the tankers owned by COSCO Shipping Tanker (Dalian) have shut off their AIS systems after the U.S. imposed sanctions on the company for allegedly shipping Iranian crude, reports Reuters.
Ship tracking data from Refinitiv Eikon indicates that in the week ending October 7, 14 tankers, including nine VLCCs, have gone dark.
The U.S. imposed sanctions on the company on September 25. At the time, the U.S. Department of State said the company, along with five others, knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the transport of oil from Iran in defiance of sanctions set in place in November 2018.
Are they going to attempt to ram destroyers?
Isn’t that like an airliner turning off its transponder? Are there any applicable regulations at sea?
Who could foresee China being a bad player?
It was a joke. We all could...
It’s hell when your proxies don’t get off scot free.
They’really trying to avoid getting caught making pickups and deliveries.
Pretty stupid of the Chinese. This may hinder the tracking of the tanker ships at sea but the second they hit an Iranian port I guarantee that the US military knows about it. One analyst using satellite data could easily track the movements of at least 2 or three of these tankers.
We should start seizing these Chinese ships.
We should sink a couple.
L
Yup.
They have MUCH to hide...
Wow, Costco has everything. Does Sam’s Club have tankers too?
“We should sink a couple.”
Agreed, but only when they are in Chinese territorial waters so that the ChiComs must clean up the mess.
Are they just parking and powering down for the change over inspections? Were they not bought out?
You’re about 10 days behind the news
They have tanks...
I thought that is what happened, this could explain them going dark right?
Wonder who is insuring those cargoes?
Turning off AIS would be a breach of policy.
Damn, I usually go there on weekends, now I better go tomorrow.
Yeah, but you can't just buy one tanker at Costco, you have to buy a pallet full.
Point I’m making is that there might be a more simpler answer for this than some big dangerous conspiracy theory. lol
“Wow, Costco has everything. Does Sams Club have tankers too?”
Welcome to Cosco. I love you.
