Californians not giving up trucks, SUVs setting state up for failure on climate goals

California is not on track to meet its greenhouse gas emission goals, in part because Californians just aren’t ready to give up their trucks and SUVs.

A new study by nonprofit group Next 10 and Beacon Economics found Californians in late 2018 owned more gas-guzzling pickups, mini-vans and SUVs than they did five years ago. Those vehicles made up 57.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in 2018, compared to 39.3 percent in 2013.

...

“Assuming the same rate of reduction from 2016 to 2017, California will reach its 2030 and 2050 goals in 2061 and 2157, respectively — representing a 31-year and a 107-year delay,” according to the report.

I recently read the oceans are being polluted there by billions of little pieces of rubber tires. They need to outlaw rubber tires.

more trucks and SUVs are being sold in Calif because dealers have found they make more money on premium kickbacks from (state approved) 84-month car loans (yes, 84-months) than on the sale of the vehicle. Illegals and youth are a target audience for those loans, which allow them to get more expensive cars than they would normally be able to afford or insure. How many of those get repossessed or wrecked without insurance long before the 84 months is up is another story.

These electric pickup/SUVs are more efficient than a Prius. We don't need to subsidize Muslims and the Red Army forever with a massive annual 1 trillion dollar wealth transfer from the West to OPEC + Russia. In addition to Bollinger, Rivian Tesla and others will bring electric pickups/SUVs to market that can run on coal/nuclear/natural gas/hydro/solar/wind generated electricity.

That scenario would make a great Allstate ad, with Mayhem.

The interesting part about boomers buying fifth wheel camping trailers is where are they going to go? Where can they be stored.

Camping spaces are crowded to capacity. In many places, for an extended stay of say a week it is necessary to get a reservation many months in advance.

Then there is the problem of storage. If I were younger, I would buy 5 acres of ground and open a camper storage business. I would not mess with storage lockers, just RV’s.

When you travel the interstates, at the outskirts of many cities is a Camping World store. There are zillions of RV’s for sale. I think everybody and their brother is manufacturing them

You touch on some good points.

I agree with your take on things.

Boondocking has become a big thing now, people wanting to get away from the crowds.
