Turkey launches offensive in northern Syria with air strikes

Turkish warplanes have bombed parts of north-eastern Syria at the start of an offensive which could lead to conflict with Kurdish-led allies of the US.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the operation was to create a "safe zone" cleared of Kurdish militias which will also house Syrian refugees.

The strikes have killed at least two civilians, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.

The group vowed to resist any Turkish advance across the border.

It asked the US and the coalition against the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) to establish a no-fly zone in the area to stop "attacks on innocent people".

The Kurds - key US allies in defeating IS in Syria - guard thousands of IS fighters and their relatives in prisons and camps in areas under their control and it is unclear whether they will continue to be safely detained.

Turkish ground forces have been massing on the border. The offensive was launched just days after President Donald Trump controversially withdrew US troops from northern Syria, a decision announced after a phone call with Mr Erdogan that sparked widespread criticism at home and abroad.

Trump has had a long standing affection for Erdogan. I can’t tell if he is willfully or unwillfully blind where it comes to Turkey

The entire civil war was a CIA/State/Saudi operation designed to overthrow Assad

That is a fact.

Maybe just maybe letting Turkey clean out a 20 buffer along its border and bust up refugee camps that are ISIS recruiting grounds...is a good strategic move

Why does he hate Kurds?

Why are you so enamored of Maoists? Did you contact your congressman and demand he declare war on Turkey yet? If not, why not?

Because we were too obsessed in the Cold War to see the real threats of Islam. Ethiopia is also communist but fighting the good fight against the death cult.

If I recall correctly, we still have our nukes in Turkey, and we recently agreed to F35s. And they are part of NATO. I remember many fellow soldiers in my earlier career during the cold war who had very fond memories of tours in Turkey. I was never stationed there myself.

Granted, that was before Erdogan, but I suspect there are other Turks who are still amenable to the US.

Wasn’t the point of Trump to avoid foreign entanglements? But he is entangled with the Saudis and now the Turks.

"Why does he hate Kurds?"

The Marxist Kurds?
The Maoist Kurds?
The Kurds fighting for Iran?
The Kurds fighting for Turkey
The Kurds fighting with Assad's Army?
The Kurds fighting for expanding the autonomous area Assad granted them into Iran and Iraq?
Or the Kurds fighting for an independent Kurdistan
(and who fight all the other factions)?
Or some particular group of Kurds who own a restaurant in DC?

You have to be specific even when tossing around such a baseless accusation just because the memo from your masters said it was the accusation of the day.
