Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., defended her call for potential "prison abolition" as part of broader restructuring of the criminal justice system, in a series of tweets Monday.
"Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery," Ocasio-Cortez wrote in reaction to a tweet from comedian Chelsea Handler. "To end it, we have to change. That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country."
The Democrat recalled a conversation she had with a woman who was "thrown into Rikers [Island] as a teenager" and was "put in solitary confinement for months," which she called "torture."
"The conditions were so bad, she too had drank out of toilets," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "A cage is a cage is a cage. And humans dont belong in them.

How can you possibly argue with a mind as incredible as AOC’s? She is so full of knowledge and wisdom gained from her bartenderette years . . . I’m envious.
This “free the prisoners” concept is working out real well in Mexifornia.
Just when you think her brain has finally gone dead from lack of oxygen, she says something even stupider than the last thing. And her constituents PAY HER to represent them!
Is this what you call cognitive dissonance? These people make hundreds of thousands of LAWS. You can’t get out of bed without breaking some law these jerks made, and then they spout their mouths about too many people incarcerated!
Free da Peoples, except Trump & his gang.
Sounds eerily similar to her comment about illegal drinking out of toilet. Perhaps her synapses switched tracks in her Mensa brain. She seems to have a potty fixation along with wyomn being oppressed.
Socialists like AOC have a hard time understanding that there are evil people who need punishment. And confinement for their own good and the protection of others. They just can’t function as productive members of society. The problem is always seen to be the fault of society. The socialists sometimes ally with libertarians who think we don’t need government for ANYTHING, and the result is the recent get-out-of-jail legislation.
She seems to be obsessed with drinking out of toilets. Did she not hear the correction to that notion which was in the news with the pictures of toilets which had an attached sink - manufactured for just various types of small spaces?
Also, as to prisons arising out of Jim Crow laws - that is also ludicrous. Has she no sense of history. In the bible were many instances of prisons back before the time of Christ.
Ask her if she thinks the Bad Orange Man should be locked up.
Well, Whippings, stocks, caged humiliation in town squares, executions, cutting off hands, are all ways to manage crime without prisons.
AOC seems to have a thing about drinking out of toilets. This is the second time its been included in one of her fanciful anecdotes.
Twitter: Where Brains Go to Die
We could try the “just alternative” of comfort women, starting with Any Odd C—uh, Congresswoman.
I suppose that capital punishment is a “just” alternative to incarceration, at least in some cases.
I'm going to need that diagrammed out for me because I don't see the "logic".
I disagree. It serves the lefts purpose to have criminals roaming unfettered in poor neighborhoods. It helps promote the narrative that the miserable living conditions in slums and barrios are the fault of the rich and conservatives. The left, of course, who promote this narrative can typically afford to live in well-patrolled neighborhoods behind security fences.
One con could certainly be housed in AOC’s new apartment. Might be able to show her how that garbage disposal works.
Thrown into Rikers. A New York City prison which is run by Democrats.
Wonder if AOC is aware of the irony here.
That is until communism takes over then she will lay the cornerstone on the first gulag.
